Hi i went to my local Super Walmart here in Walla Walla, anyways they said i don`t need a doc`s perscription for the Novolin Insulins put out by Relion.. Ayways, my question is, does anyone here take the Novolin 70/30 mix? Going to ask my doc about it when i see him on June 2nd. If he oks it, well gonna give it a try, it`s alot less exspenvive than my Lantus, and plus no perscrption needed.. In Texas where i use to live i needed scrips for needles etc, here in Wa, State none needed..Anyone who replies, I thank you..

Wow, I didn't know anything that differently played in different states. I have to have scripts for all my insulin's,needles, test strips etc etc.
Marcia
oh, and in answer to your question, I can't answer you. I have never been on 70/30. Just the Lantus and Humulin R.

Catlvr222, I'd recheck that info if I were you. I also live in Washington state... and insulin is still very much a written rx med. Maybe you misunderstood? Or maybe the pharmacy  misunderstood your question?

That's correct, you don't need a script for 70/30 in most states and it's cheaper for a reason. It's an insulin mixture, not an insulin analog like Lantus and Humalog and Novolog are.

Novolin 70/30 is a mixture of "N" (NPH) and "R" (Regular) insulins. They're both very old technology, individually and mixed. You'll find its effects are MUCH different than your Lantus has been. The "N" part of the mix is very peaky and you'll probably have to learn when it peaks and snack accordingly to prevent lows. The regular portion of the mix is to cover meals. Since it's premixed and the ratio isn't adjustable, you'll have to eat according to (not too few, not too many carbs) what you've injected. In addition, its action is much slower than the more rapid Humalog is.

In spite of all the negatives I've just mentioned, it may work for you if you're Type Two and willing to follow its schedule. Many Type Twos have used it successfully. If you're Type One, I wouldn't even consider using it. Check with you're doctor to see if he/she thinks it's a good plan.

David had some wonderful words of wisdom for you.  I took 70/30 many years ago.  It is a hard insulin to manage.  If you take it twice a day, with breakfast and with supper, the R part will help with the meals, but the Intermediate part of the equation often peaks when you do not want it to peak - about 8 hours after you take it.  So the breakfast dose will be peaking mid-afternoon, when you may need a snack, and the supper dose will be peaking in the middle of the night, which is not when you want a peak at all.  Most people on this insulin regimen were switched to 4 shots a day, taking regular (also available with no RX) with meals and Intermediate (no RX) at bedtime, so that it would peak for your dawn phenomena.  I would go with the 4 shots if I were you rather than deal with a mixed insulin.  It would still be no RX and a slightly newer regimen than 70/30.

Hey thanks everyone, I think i`ll stick to the Lantus ,lol, just wanted some info on it.
But yes, u don`t need a script for it here in Wa.State, and not for needles either. I was told here in Wa State no scripts for the needles and Walmarts brand,The Relion needles are $12.98 for 100. All types, i use the 1cc,5/16 syringe..Guess it`s the Lantus for me, i pay outta pocket for mine at the clinic here in town, i guess it`s worth it, only $33.00 for the vial, so thats even doable.. Well all, have a good evening..

You can usually get insulins with no scripts, but not insulin analogs.  So you could get regular, but not Humalog or Novolog Rapid acting insulins, or Lantus.

I have been buying needles in Texas since I started insulin and have never had to have a script. I just go into
walmart or cvs and buy needles.  Regular insulings do not require a script here only the Lantus and the new generation insulins. I have bought relion insulin many times when I forgot to bring my usual insulins never had to have a script.
the only time I use a script is fot those things that are coveded by ins. My insulin is now convered so I am using a script for humalog.

I live in Texas and it just depends on where I go. Krogers I have to have a script, WalMart I have to have one for insulin but not the syringes, Sam's I have to have scripts foe everything.I think its just a policy of the store pharmacy on whether you have to have a perscription or not.
When I was traveling , I stopped in a pharmacy in Arkansas and they never asked for a perscription and got a vial of R and 70/30 and syringes.

I wouldn't recommend any premixed insulins. They have weird and variable peaks and very rarely work well for anyone.
