Hi, I'm a type 1 diabetic and have a little boy, he turned out to be breech and so I had an elected c-section.  He was 8lb 7 at 38 weeks (I reckon under normal circumstances - i.e. minus the diabetes I would be on for a 6.7 - 7.7 size baby as I'm not very big!).  Now heading towards the middle of my second pregnancy and....can I have this one naturally?  They won't let me go past 40 weeks, and I hear they won't induce if you had a c-section already.  Apart from praying for my baby to come out about 38 weeks ('cos if the next one is as big then I don't think I would be able to get out a 40 week baby naturally as I would imagine it would be over the 9lb mark judging by the size of my 1st).

Anyone had any experience of this - I'm going to ask the docs about it too - but just wanted to hear any personal stories - if anyone has had the same thing.

I had mine before I was diagnosed with diabetes and I had them the old fashioned way,,lol. But my daughter and my daughter-in-law have each had 2 children and they had c-sections each time. But I have heard of women giving birth naturally after a c-section. I mainly wanted to respond to this so it would go back to the top of the list and maybe some younger gal would see it!! Good luck having that sweet little baby however he/she decides to come into the world!!!!

Wow, i seem to not be getting all my emails today... I just checked the board because I didn't get an email I knew I should have gotten, but anyway...
I am glad I did....
I am at the end of my 3rd pregnancy, I had c-sections with both my other kids. The first time it was needed to save my daughter's life, the second I allowed because the doctor I was seeing was nearing retirement and he wanted to do a repeat c section and I let myself be pressured in to it. At the time, it was considered ok to have a vbac so I figured the next time I would do it naturally. Fast forward 4 years, ok closer to 5. Now the AMA has decided that while vbac is ok for women who have had only one c section, they are recomending against vbac for women who have had 2 c sections. Sooo, now I am stuck and the doctors will not even consider allowing me to try.
So i guess my point is, if you are otherwise able to give birth naturally, you should at least try it. If you dont, and you decide to have another baby, you will be quite possibly closing the door to ever having a natural childbirth, and at least in my experience, it is alot harder to go through the c section a second or even third time. The first time it was nesesary, and I didnt have a clue what I was getting into, the second time I knew what was going to happen and what everything was for and it was the hardest thing in the world to walk into that operating room and let them give me that operation. I was super upset when I discovered this time that it was the way it was going to be from now on just because...
the risks for a vbac are not that great, less than 1 percent in a woman who has had only one c section with no other complications. I would strongly suggest you try to have your baby naturally this time and if your doctor is not supportive of that, then find one who is if you can...

Well only a few more weeks to go.....the section question continues....'cos they aren't up for inducing and from speaking to a few midwives - inductions after previous sections are not something that the docs and midwives like doing.  Alongside this, the baby is large (they reckon 8lb 7 at the 34 week scan!! - I do actually think it is bigger than my first as there are some clothes I can't fit into anymore and I am not much heavier than last time - only a couple of pounds - stilll don't understand why this one is so big as my hba1c's have been ok - all under 7 - round about the 6.1 - 6.6 mark so not really high)  Alongside this the baby is now breech - how an 8lb baby managed that (as it only did it recently - yep felt that!) is beyond me....so feeling more relaxed about it as the choice isn't really in my hands - at the end of the day I want the safest thing for both me and the baby - not so keen on the section recovery time especially with a 2.5 year old....will find out for sure in a couple of weeks what they want to do!

I'm torn... I too have had a csection, and now being prego.... well I'm thinking that lines too. I have an 8 (will be 9 by then) yr old son at home.   No other help.  I did it all on my own when it was me and Him.   But it was just US... no animals, no other kids.  I'm torn.  I'd kindda like to feel that feeling too.  But at the same time the idea of having a 8 or 9 pound baby scares the beegeebers out of me.  He was 6 pounds 2 ounces.  I couldn't do it....  He had other issues too.  Muconium, and fetal distress from it.  I do look forward to the possibility of being awake for the birth this time.  My section was done in such an emergency that I was put under general anesthesia.

Good luck Kats

Well they are booking me for a section 'cos this one is breech and in an awkward position as well - so I've been warned that if I go into labour or my waters go to go in straight away 'cos of the risk of the cord dropping out!

I feel absolutely huge, though the last scan still said a weight of 8lb7 - my sugars have been ok - but starting to get swollen feet and feel really tired - spending as much time as possible swimming!  Got to see my consultant on Wednesday and we will get all the dates sorted - as long as everything is ok - it is just 6 weeks of being careful and 45 mins of Op - it dosen't sound so bad if you look at it in time scales and we'll have another lovely little person at the end of it

Further update .... Joseph turned up on the 26th July (was booked in for my section on the 28th, but he couldn't wait!).  He weighed in at 9lb 14oz - and is now just over 10lb so feeding well, and I am breast feeding (which I was keen on doing).  I ended up starting to have contractions on the Monday night, and they kept me in, even though they didn't seem to be doing anything much...the registrars were a bit nervous as I was still having contractions in the morning...but had just started my brekkie when the registrar came round that morning so they couldn't add me to their morning list, then by just after lunch (and shepherds pie!!!) the contractions got stronger and more regular, there was this debate between the gynae/obs guy and the aneasthist over how soon after me eating my lunch they could get the baby out, the gynae/obs guy had to prove Joe was still breech, and his cord was low, I was in labour and it had to be done there and then.  The c-section op was fine, couldn't feel a thing, went on a sliding scale overnight, but they took me off it 'cos it got to the stage of them just giving me glucose as my sugars went quite low. Joe went into SCBU for the 1st day and a half, he had to have a glucose drip, but by 11am the next day his sugars had stabilised (he was born at 16:48), I was able to start breast feeding whilst he was in SCBU and expressing some, then came out of hospital on Saturday so 6 nights which was ok.  My sugars are still a little all over the place with the breast feeding, but haven't had too many hypos - nothing that I couldn't deal with anyway.  I now have 2 beautiful boys which is great - both of them doing well and who don't seem to have been too effected by a diabetic Mum!

Hi,
I just deliverd two weeksago. I am Type II diabetic. I had two children vaginal when I was in my early 20s. I just had third one in my late 30s. Doctors told me I can have vaginal for this one since I had vaginal before. Because I am diabeic for this baby they induced in 38 weeks and broke the water early . The labor went since noon and I pushed hard as much as I can. I am sure you can do it if you have lot of energy. I ended up for C section for this baby because the cord was tangled on my babys stomach and neck. Dr can see my babys head but not coming out so they realised something wrong and did c.Thank god we both survived. The mistake they made is Dr. did not monitor baby on the ultrasound. See if you can monitor the baby in the ultra sound and make sure baby is positioned alright. If the baby is ok there is no doubt you can have vaginal delivery in 6 hrs after they induse the labor. Good Luck to you and your baby.

Sincerely,
Paru
