Oh, boy, can I remember those days!! Evan was diagnosed in kindergarten (1/2 day), so when the full day schedule rolled around, I was terrified.

Are you planning on going to school with him on the 1st day? If so, you would then be able to at least touch base with his new teacher. I would also carry a copy of "instructions" (or 504 plan) that could be handed to the teacher to read. This would include your son's symptoms of hyper/hypoglycemia, carb ratios, sliding scales, emergency info, etc. I also packed Evan's lunch for the first few weeks until I could get a grip on how he was doing and how everyone around him was handling him. That way I knew his exact carb count at lunch. The snack issue should be covered in the "instructions" paper (or 504 plan). Also stress to the teacher, as well as the administration, that your son has to have access to the nurse, water, and the restroom as needed. The 1st day of school is a busy one for the school nurse. Be sure to touch base with her and make a scheduled time that the two of you can sit down and have a discussion concerning his needs and your expectations. Also, be sure to leave a copy of the 504/instructions with her. It will be over before you know it.......deep breath and hang in there!!!! It will be ok.
