Hello Everyone. I have been diabetic for almost 15 years. I just had a beautiful baby girl 8 months ago. She is absolutely amazing. Anyway...I am looking for other diabetic mothers out there that used artificial sweeteners while pregnant. I did, and then afterwards heard that it can cause cancer.
Now I am worried I did something that could potentially hurt my child. I am looking for reassurance if anyone has any. Anyone out there with beautiful healthy children that used artificial sweeteners??
e

Hi e,
I am 70 years old and have used altificial sweetner all my life.  I heard the same tales 50 years ago. I have 2 perfectly healthy children who are in their middle 40's. My daughter has used artificial sweetner all her life and has a healthy 18 year old son.

Thank you so much. That is all I wanted to hear! I think sometimes looking at these websites get the better of me. There is so much information on what you should and shouldn't do....I guess it is just better to live life, be happy and don't worry about everything!!

Thanks again.

I think a large concern with artificial sweeteners is specifically with Neutrasweet (aspartame) because it contains phenylalanine. Phenylalanine can cause problems with neurological development in the fetus if the fetus is PKU intolerant (also called Phenylketonuria). Kids that are born with pku intolerance will end up with brain damage if they consume phenylalanine. (foods that contains phenylalanine will be labled - check out the label of our next diet coke) However, babies are tested for pku intolerance at birth. If you used aspartame during pregnancy and the baby was born healthy, I would not worry that you unknowingling caused any harm to your child by using artifical sweeteners. You would undoubtedly know by now. :)

I have read this thread and have found this reserch into aspartamine as Im a diabetic on insulin i took note  after reading this Hope it helps its pretty scary stuff but if sweetner was taken out of the market would mean billions of pounds lost  but what about the cost in health care??? pretty tough debate i think I actually use a fruit sweetner

IF artificial sweeteners caused cancer in humans (carcinogenic), the EPA and FDA would have pulled them from the market YEARS ago.
They DID pull Cyclomates from the market back in the late 70's early 80's (no later than 82). This is for the USA only, as Canada, our neighbour to our north and Mexico, our neighbour to our south ALLOW cyclomates on the market, but they do NOT allow saccherine (name brand: sweet N low). I am not sure if any other markets allow cyclomates vs saccherine.. But I do know that ALL markets allow aspartame (name brand: Nutrasweet) AND sucralose (name brand: Splenda).
I have also never heard of it interfering with children, unless they have Phenylketonuria (PKU), a metabolic disorder, in which the artificial sweetener can make them very ill if not kill them. PKU is one of the tests that are mandated by the federal goverment of all newborns. It is a recessive genetic metabolic disorder (you need a gene from both parents.. and if both parents have it, it is a 25% chance you will have it, 25% chance that you would NOT be a carrier and a 50% chance to be a carrier of the defective gene).

I've read the things on Aspartime & I have asked my Son & Daughter in law to please not let my grandson have anything with aspartime in it.. just to be on the safe side. I use Splenda. But my father in law a 30 year diabetic hes in his early 80's now ,he has always used aspartime sweetners and has had no affect from them ..so who knows..it may be up to the individuals own body how it reacts to cssrtain things, as we know not all diabetics are alike when it comes to what & what not we can eat..one can eat certain things that does not raise their sugars while another diabeitc eats that very item ..it would cause their sugar to rise sky high.Thats my 2 cents worth.
