I read a while back that some airlines are considering charging obese passengers over a set weight for two seats.

Is this fair to the obese person?
 Is charging double fare fair?
Have you ever sat next to one who was taking over your seat space?
 How did you feel?
Did you say anything about it?

Is this fair to the obese person? Not if they can fit in one seat with the arm rest up.
Is charging double fare fair? Same answer
Have you ever sat next to one who was taking over your seat space?  Not super obese
How did you feel?     If it happened I would probably be annoyed.
Did you say anything about it? I wouldn't.

Is this fair to the obese person? it depends how obeses they are I guess. if they are lapping over taking say over half of the next seat then yes its fair to charge more but how much I don't know.
Is charging double fare fair? above
Have you ever sat next to one who was taking over your seat space? Yes but not to bad. I left the arm rest to help them out.
 How did you feel?  Uncomfortable
Did you say anything about it?  No and I wouldn't embarrass them.

I travel often during the year and run into this more often than not. I have seen some passengers that truly need two seats. Its not right to make the passenger next to them suffer and have less room.

Well, I've started traveling more lately. And I've looked at (namebrand) Airlines, 'cos their fares are generally the lowest. And I'm overweight, so I went to their website to get information to see if I would need to buy 2 seats.

Guess what?  Even after talking to a real person, I couldn't get a straight-forward answer.  Apparently, it is decided by the eye of the gate agent. So, if I only bought 1 ticket, and they decided I needed 2 - if the flight was full, it was 'too bad, so sad' and I would be on the next flight. Which doesn't work when you're traveling with a group, or making connecting flights, or whatever.

I read where this same airline required an overweight person to buy an extra seat, even though she was traveling with a small child, and could have 'overflowed' into that seat with the armrest up. They said it wasn't fair to the youngster.

So, needless to say, I've never tried flying that airline!

those airline seats are rather small to begin with many times I have sat next to someone who was a little over their seat. Yes it is uncomfortable for everyone concerned.I think the airlines should have some guidelines in place so that people who need the extra seat can purchase the extra seat ahead of time .

The airlines need to accomodate passengers better. I wish someone obese would sue the airlines  for discrimination of not having seats for overweight people. We have to accomodate the handicap so why not one who is considered overweight by an airline company?

Whoopi-  With a practice like that it could cause one to miss their flight last minute if they need two seats. The airline needs the policy upfront before one purchases a ticket if they are going to do this.  I see this being open for lawsuits. I don't blame you for not wanting to fly their airlines. All people have the right to fly regardless of any characteristics about them.

Bandy- You're right. The seats are not of normal size to egin with and forget the leg space for the most part. LOL! We're like sardines crunched in our seats.
