Excellent question -- there's no easy answer here. I definitely think all food served with allergic products -- peanuts, milk, wheat ........ should be posted as to what was in food product. Now, don't they let child choose randomly from many items? When we were in school they had lunch trays all made up and everyone ate the same thing and the they cost us 35 cents. I shutter to think how many children ended up sick or hospitalized from the way those lunches were prepared. Karen |

No, I don't believe they should ban them. If we start banning all the foods that kids might be allergic to, what choices will be left. How many kids are allergic to chicken products, flour, white sugar, etc? There wouldn't be any choices for kids who do not eat meat if peanutbutter was not offered. I think it is the parents responsibility to teach their children to avoid the foods that they are allergic to. If my children had food allergies, I would pack their lunches for them to make sure they got the proper nutrition, but that's just me talking. The school I work at has the majority of the kids on the free lunch program, even though a lot of the kids simply skip eating. Most of the kids who skip eating just don't like anything the school is serving, so they doin't eat. When I ask why they don't bring their lunch, the reply is usually that mom or dad don't want to bother with it...they are told to eat at school. CC - our school offers 3 kinds of milk plus bottled water. No soda, no juice (except at breakfast) |

Charlee- I feel the same way. Its the parents responsibility. Others should not have to do without because some can't have it. I know the airlines for years stopped giving peanuts and now they give them out again. Years ago I was at a Taekwondo tournament. A friend of my sons was showing off her emergency kit that contained a needle with meds. incase she had an allergic reaction. They not only kept peanut products out of the refreshment area but they also kept the balloons away from each competition area. Normally there is a balloon at each spot up high. She was actually gloating about it. I told her that I thought it was wrong that over a thousand people had to go without just for her? One of the Reps putting on the competition heard me and asked me later what all I thought and I told him. He said they were approached by her Mom prior to the planning of the tournament and felt there would be trouble otherwise. He started asking other parents and realized all of felt the same...the girl should not be there under the circumstances. They will not do this again. |
