Help please to find the family of Patrick Carmody son of John and Bridget Carmody of Ennis, Clare, Ireland. I have Patrick Carmody b 1811 Kilmeaney and his wife Bridget 1817 Kilmeaney (Parents Patrick and Nancy Mc Naly) arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia 1838 as Bounty Immigrants. Patrick a farmer, Bridget a dairy maid. Patrick's brother John b 1812 Ennis, Clare, Ireland arrived in 1841 at Sydney and married Mary Carey in NSW a few years later. Both Patrick and John died in Queensland, Australia. | |

Hi Mike, you have been busy on my behalf again, if I could I'd shout you a Guinness. I have relations living down near Woollongong, and it is quite a nice seaside area. We have lot's of strange aboriginal names of places over here. The message re the cousins and the shipping one are very interesting, do you feel they are the right ones. I notice that the family mentioned is actualy the children of Patrick and as Bridget died giving birth to the twins, that would explain why one was adopted as all their children were sent to live with Uncle John and Aunty Mary (Carey) you have unravelled another piece of history. Will have to search for Bridgets family as well as Carmody now we have here surname. Do you think it was Patrick alias Matthew? All his records in Australia were Patrick and he named his first son Patrick. I know it had Bridget dairymaid ( correct) was that in 1838? Sorry to keep asking you more questions. I feel we are at last getting there. Thanks again, Regards Zoe |

Hi zoe Ian McDonald has contacted me,I have given Ian your Email address to contact you.I hope you dont mind. so please expect a message from him, hopefully we have found another living relative. Zoe i cant be 100% sure the record of ENTRY into australia is correct one Via Mathew,But everything seems to fit They did use Alias on some records as the ticket may have been brought by a family member.I have seen this twice now. That was 1838 Bounty Emigrants so just look at it for present as this is what may have happened. Let me know what happens with Ian, Take care Mike |

Zoe this is Ians Reply Hello Mike, I wrote the following some time ago: I'm trying to find where my great great grand parents are buried. They were Patrick and Bridget Carmody (nee Doughan) and Patrick was a farmer at Pages River (Murrurundi NSW) in 1850. Among their children were John, born 1848 and twins James and Joseph bobrn 1850. For reasons unknown, Joseph was adopted by a McDonald family. Any help will be greatly appreciated Ian McDonald and you responded with: Hi there s a Lady on My site ENGLISH AND IRISH FAMILY SEARCH.Who is related to Patrick and Bridget. Mike Your reply just came to me via cousin connect. Can you give me any further details as to how I can Contact this lady or her family tree? Anything at all will be a great help. I suspect that Patrick and Bridget were from Dublin and came here to Australia in 1838 aboard a ship named "Magistrate"..but I'm not certain as finding info on them has been very difficult. Maybe Ian has found the Correct ship and they sailed from Dublin MIKE

Hello again Mike, I have just received an email from Ian, he is at the other end of Australia to me but that is okay. Yes we are both researching the same family and I will put him in touch with other members shortly. He is right about the ship "Magistrate," I have just received the name of it. I knew that Patrick and Bridget came in 1838 together as husband and wife and their ages. The big problem is I haven't been able to go back to the next generation of John and Brigdet Carmody. I didn't know Patrick's Bridget's maiden name only thought it looked like McNally for her mother and all she had was Patrick for her father, no surname. What a muddle, all these Patrick's and Bridgets. LOL Thanks again for all your help, you have been absolutely wonderful. Regards Zoe |

HI Mike, me again, just found out the "Magistrate" sailed from Cork, 8 March, 1838 I got that from another site.Arrived Sydney, NSW. 21 July 1838. Long trip. 272 passengers. Ian says that Patrick and Bridget Carmody came from Kilmeaney???? Is there such a place? I refuse to get confused but it is starting to get to me. Thanks again Zoe |

Hi Zoe,As far as we know there is no town called Kilmeaney. This is what you said in your first message. This is why i suggested contact with Peter. We believe You may have the Name on some kind of Cert,It was the Irish brogue,Submitters put it down as it sounded . If you look up the Clare townlands you will see,Marian has a book of townlands,And there is no Kilmeaney The other two Girls Must have realised that as they Added Kilmurrey But Again i dont think is Correct town Mike |

Hi Mike, thanks for all your messages. I received a pack of details re the Carmody brothers in New South Wales. It appears Bridget, Patrick's wife gave a different mother's sur name with just about every child she had baptised. Some have Duggan, Doughan, Doolan and another Doohan on their baptismal certificates. I believe Bridget must have had a strong accent. Patrick Carmody was always listed as father. So far no one has been able to find their marriage. One relie even thinks the may not have been married. I thought perhaps shipping emmigration might say where they were from when they went on board at Cork. Regards Zoe |

Hi zoe i bet you was thrilled to recieve this info,Just shows really. How when one family member starts a search.Every one starts. Its strange that the Name Doogan Doughan ,Are all very similar. I feel sure they were married in Ireland though. With the Catholic faith it would be like a crime To live in Sin.Hopefully Zoe we will get lucky. JOIN THE Irish family history foundation, its free to join when the clare records are added they will notify you.. Mike |
