Hi

Looking for any information on my g.g.grandmother Lucy Knaggs bc 1828 in Mullingar, Westmeath and her brother George bc 1840 in Mullingar. Father was also a George. Both Lucy and George (jnr) came and settled in Australia.

Any info or connections greatly appreciated.

Judy

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your replies. I have been in touch with Rodney Harbourne and several other descendants of Lucy's brother George.

Yes, that is Frederick's ancestors and children. My brickwall is anything prior to Lucy and George being in Australia.  I have a page put up on the Redcoat Soldiers who came to Australia if you would like to read it. One on George will be up there at some stage also. Fred was also in the 99th Regiment and the same info is on that one also. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~garter1/Gurney9620Fred.htm although it needs to be edited again.

Regards,
Judy

Judy,  The link you gave in your previous message will not connect to the page for your ancestor.  Not sure if it is the correct url
I was interested to read about him as my gg grandfather was also in the 99th regiment of foot and came to australia as a convict guard in 1842

Hi Liz

Sorry about that. If you type the address in and delete the Gurney bit off you should be able to get it. Let me know if it works for you.

Judy,  Finally got onto his records - he was in the 99th regiment the same year that my gg grandfather left it
I wonder if they knew each other at all?  Probably did if they were in the same regiment but not all the regiment were transferred together and they went off in different directions at times
I have researched this regiment about 10 years ago and it is very interesting
Did you know that they have a memorial to the 99th regiment in Anglesea Barracks in Tasmania?
It is the only one in the world I think

Hi Liz
Glad it worked this time. What was your grandfather's name. I didn't know about the memorial so that was interesting.

Judy,  His name was Arthur ALLEN
He was born in 1816 in Aberdeen Scotland and joined up with the 99th regiment in 1835
He came to NSW in 1842 as a convict guard on the ship Marquis of Hastings.  He left the regiment when he married in 1849
I have some wonderful stories about this regiment
If you do a google search for 99th regiment of foot memorial then you will be able to see the pictures online.  It is a rather plain structure but it is nice to have something to remember the soldiers by
They also wrote a polka in tasmania for the 99th regiment which I have a copy of.
I cannot imagine these soldiers in their redcoat outfits dancing the polka - can you?  the mind boggles!
It is a very catchy little tune and I also found that online
There is a fantastic amount of info online for the british regiments as you probably already know
Liz

Hi Liz
I was hoping you would say your grandfather's name was John Knight(s) as I know he was a friend of Fred's as Lucy contacted him when Fred died to find out about his family in England.

I shall have a look for the polka (agree with you, the mind does boggle) and the memorial.

2/14th Foot Buckinghamshire Regiment. I have a photo of him at which looks like a reunion and in it is King Edward VIII (in fact all the men in the photo look the same with white beard and moustache). I believe he landed in Adelaide sometime after 1852 as Lucy and Fred were listening to some soldiers names (they had just landed) and Lucy realised one was her brother George so they went and met up with him. Both families stayed close.
