I am researching the family of William Allen Layfield born in Manchester, England.  His parents were William (Sr) and Harriet Preston Calvert Hodgson Layfield.  They had 4 children that I know of --- Allen, born 1879, William born 1892, Walter born 1896 and Annie born 1898-- possibly 2 other children---Kate and Isabella, born between 1879 and 1892 (yet to be confirmed)-- Liverpool, vol 86, p. 130 and vol 86, pg 103 rspectively.  They lived in the Liverpool area. ( 5 Warren Street, Liverpool , RG 12/2913, folio 128, pg 16).  A challenge arises with another William and Harriet Layfield living in the same area at the same time.

In 1901 census, Harriet and 3 of her children were found in the Chorlton Union workhouse, she supposedly being widowed.   Walter and William were subsequently shipped to Canada as BHC's --- The archivist at the Manchester Library indicates the records of Chorlton do not indicate a date of death for Harriet, or a discharge--leading me to wonder if she just ran away.  Information obtained from Barnardo's records indicate mother's whereabouts as *unknown.*

My quest is to find more information on Allen, Kate, Isabella; to find a death record for William Jr. and Harriet Layfield-- and to figure out how to access birth/death records for Kate and Isabella to confirm that they are part of William and Harriet's family.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Celtic Cousins, yes... and also CousinConnect-- where I actually did find my grandfather's two daughters in England.    I had spent several years (before all the info on the Internet became available) looking around to find Walter and William, and then trying to find the Layfield info after that, so at this point the information I have on the Hodgson's and Calvert's is pretty sparse, so I do appreciate the help.   The Internet has been a great resource.

Do the English have naming traditions similar to the Scottish and Irish?   My mother's family were Scottish and it was easy to trace them, as they followed the naming patterns practically to the letter.

Gail A bit more Via Marian

I have found they came from the Dales, in North Yorkshire.  I have just found the family in 1861 and it seems they were well off.  He was a farmer of 158 acres and employing 3 men.  Living in Laverton.  Looking at my map it is just beside Kirkby Malzeard near Ripon.

They had more children then.  I will send you the details when I hear back.

I have found William and Harriet with Allen age 12 (born 1879) on the 1891 census.
Allen has been mistranscribed as "Alice" but when you see the handwritten census it is easy to see that it is in fact Allen.
Also it says that William and Harriet were born Yorkshire

I'm happy to see some info re the Calvert's; up to this point, I've not had a chance to check back on them at all.   Maybe a stupid question, but I'm not sure if I should be doing something on that *Recommend* item.... I did look back but haven't come across a reference to it.... how should I be using it?  Tks.. gail
