I am trying to trace Hugh Mitchel--maybe Mitchell.
His daughter--Sarah Jane Mitchel married Thomas Stenson in Banbridge C Down on 31st October  1857.She was 16.Her father Hugh was a tailor

The marriage was at the Registry Office in Banbridge in the parish of Seapatrick. At the time of the marriage,Sarah & Hugh were both resident in Banbridge.
Thomas Stenson was living there at the time too.but was born & lived in  Ratby, Leics.

By the 1861 census Thomas & Sarah Jane were living in Liverpool. but I don't know where they were between the marriage and then,.or how long Thomas lived in Banbridge prior to the marriage.

I have been unable to trace Hugh Mitchell or his wife or any other family members and would be grateful for any advice that you are able togive me.

Thank you--Eileen

Eileen, do you happen to know the occupation of Thomas?  I've found about three possibles but not sure which one is correct.  If we knew his occupation it would probably make it a little easier.

Kay--thank you for your reply.
Thomas Stenson was a either a painter & decorator or a house painter--it varies on different census forms--not sure which on his marriage cert
It does say that Thomas was resident in Banbridge at the time of the marriage,
Hugh Mitchel --Sarah Jane's father was a tailor by occupation and he too is recorded as being a resident of Banbridge at the time of the marriage.
Again--my thanks for the time you are giving to this,

Eileen

Eileen

Here's what I've found (so far!!):

On the 1861 census:  Thomas and Sarah Jane were living at 11 Brick Street, Liverpool (if you go onto Streetmap website and type this in, it appears to still stand today!).  At that time they had no children and it's recorded that Sarah Jane was born in Down, Ireland.

On the 1871 census:  Thomas and Sarah were living at 5 Richards Place, Toxteth Park with children:
Charlotte b: 1864 Toxteth Park, and
John b: 1870 Liverpool

On the 1881 census:  Thomas and Sarah Jane were living at 34 Brighton Street, Toxteth Park with their children as above plus:
William b: 1873 Liverpool
Thomas b: 1874 Liverpool
Sarah J b: 1878 Liverpool

On the 1891 census:  Thomas and Sarah with all the above children were living at 8 Blair Street, Toxteth Park and then

On the 1901 census:  Thomas and Sarah (mis-transcribed!) are recorded as living at 6 Blair Street, Toxteth Park and it looks as though all the children had then left the family home.

I will keep looking to see if I can find anything further on Hugh Mitchell and report back if I have any luck.

Hope this helps.

Kay

Ooops, sorry, I hadn't "refreshed" the page on my computer screen before typing all the above and didn't realise Mike had entered some information.

Hello Kay &Mike--thank you for this-- (I hadn't realised that Thomas had the middle name Foster.

Neither did I know about Brick Steet & that it's still there.
Must ask a young cousin to go & take a photo--will look it up as you suggest--makes it seem more real somehow!
I appreciate this information.and your time & patience--thank you--Eileen
