Dear Nighthomes Could you tell us what you already know about Albert Edward Nightingale, such as place/date of birth so that we will have a starting point to begin our search. Then one of our managers will be in contact shortly. Many thanks. Kay Manager |

Hello again Nighthomes This is Kay again here and I'll be trying to help trace your ancestors. I've found Albert, age 5, living at 8 Old Road, Heaton Norris, Lancs with his father, Charles I Nightingale and aunt Sarah Bryan. Charles is recorded as being born in 1844 Stockport, Cheshire and listed as a Railway Clerk. Sarah Bryan (nee Nightingale) is recorded as being born in 1841 Stockport, Cheshire and listed as a Dress Maker. I have also found Charles and Sarah on the 1861 census with their parents so I will list this below. Kay Manager |

1861 census: Address: 5 Portwood Street, Brimington, Cheshire Joseph Nightingale b: 1812 Chlorley, Lancs - Head - C. Bobbin Frister - (I imagine this is cotton bobbin frister, though I don't know what a frister would be I'm afraid!) Susannah Nightingale b: 1818 Compstall, Cheshire - Wife - Milliner Sarah A Nightingale b: 1841 Brimington - Milliner Charles T Nightingale b: 1844 Brimington - Railway Clerk John Nightingale b: 1833 Newton Heath, Lancs - Nephew - Milliner Maria Pemberton b: 1845 Staylebridge, Cheshire - Lodger - Milliner Charles' initial varies between I and T - I will see if I can find a birth record to confirm either way for you. Here we are! Births Mar 1844 (>99%) | NIGHTINGALE | Charles Thomas | | Stockport | 19 | 357 | and one for his sister: Births Sep 1840 (>99%) | Nightingale | Sarah Ann | | Stockport | 19 | 286 | I've also found marriage records as follows: Surname | First name(s) | | District | Vol | Page | Marriages Sep 1868 (>99%) | and Surname | First name(s) | | District | Vol | Page | Marriages Dec 1864 (>99%) | Now, we don't know which of the above, Elizabeth or Deborah, Charles married - due to the fact I can find no record of them on the 1881 census, or Albert. I'm assuming that between the 1871 and 1881 censuses they had emigrated to New Zealand. I think they only way to be sure it to obtain either a copy Marriage Certificate for Charles or copy Birth Certificate for Albert. Kay Manager |

Referring back to the 1861 census, I've just been advised the transcription of Joseph's occupation was in fact bobbin "twister", not frister as I'd thought! Hope this helps. Kay Manager |

I've also found the family on the 1851 census for you: Address: 15 Great Portwood Street, Brimington, Cheshire Joseph Nightingale b: 1813 Chorley, Lancs - Head - Bobbin Turner (employing 22 men) Susannah Nightingale b: 1817 Atherton, Cheshire - Wife - Dress Maker Sarah Ann Nightingale b: 1841 Portwood, Cheshire - Daughter - Scholar Charles Thos Nightingale b: 1844 Portwood, Cheshire - Son - Scholar John Nightingale b: 1834 Sayord, Lancs - Nephew - Apprentice We often find that birth years/places can vary - but generally they will match up. Based on the birth place of Chorley in the 1851 census I've searched for birth records of Joseph. There were two for Chorley, but one of the individuals named Joseph had died by 1812, so that would give us a fairly certain record for "your" Joseph: | | | | Event(s): | | Birth: | | | Christening: | 03 NOV 1811 | Chorley, Lancashire, England | | | Death: | | Burial: | This shows Joseph's parents - William Nightingale & Sarah. I have searched for births of Susannah but alas, so far, nothing which fits with places and dates. Kay Manager |

I've found an entry for the family on the 1841 census - you will see what I was saying earlier about birth dates and PLACES! The original image is very difficult to read but the information I can transcribe I list below: Address: (appears to be) Graham Street, Stockport, Cheshire Joseph Nightingale b: 1816 Cheshire - Bobbin Turner Susannah Nightingale b: 1821 Cheshire - Dress Maker Sarah Nightingale b: 1840 Cheshire I will look to see if I can find John (nephew) on the 1841 census to see if it may lead us to his parents (brother of Joseph, hopefully). Well I will leave you to decide whether this information is correct as we can't be 100% certain, though to be honest, I think we're pretty near! I've searched for births of John Nightingale in Newton Heath, Lancs two years either side of 1833. Two have appeared - one with and one without parents listed. Now, the one with parents listed is as follows: | | | | Event(s): | | Birth: | | Christening: | 26 MAY 1833 | Newton Heath, Lancashire, England | | | Death: | | Burial: | I'm inclined to feel this is correct. I've looked at the entries for the 1841 census and found a John Nightingale living with what I would imagine to be his mother, Jane. Other than Standish, Rivington, Lancs, there is no street address on the image but Jane is listed as a cotton weaver - which fits in a way with her brother-in-law, Joseph's occupation. Jane and son John are living with a family by the name of Calderbank - James the head and Martha, I assume his wife. I'm wondering - and this is purely supposition - if either of these could have been a sibling of Jane - just an idea. I will leave you with this information to digest and perhaps you will come back to me with your thoughts and in which direction (if any) you'd like me to look next. Hope all the above helps.
