Americans (mostly Republicans) seem to be so frightened that any act of compassion on the part of the government will open the floodgates to "creeping socialism" & probably Communism..The keep shouting their silly mantra of " We don't want Big Government because that means more taxes & that means that the government will have more control of your life." BULLSHIT I say!! There's no fucking reason why the most rich & powerful country in the world can't supply ALL their citizens EQUAL  & fair access to TOTAL MEDICAL coverage & to ALL EDUCATION (Universities etc)..These are 2 Rights that should be sacred & always available to everyone!! This is the ONLY way that people can better themselves! If there's enough tax dollars to play World Warlord at the President's fancy or build an astronomically expensive Star Wars Systems etc etc etc--then I think there's enough cash to take care of their citizens Health & Education--Where there's a WILL there's a WAY!! It doesn't mean that the government is taking over your lives--& anyways, whats wrong with a form of Democratic Socialism?? What 2 issues can be more important or can personally touch & change people's lives more then Health & Education...Unfortunately, my country, Canada, is going in the wrong direction--We still have Medical coverage for all, but the government is cutting back on services in far too many areas, but thats an issue for another rant..At least I (& ALL Canadians) can go to almost any medical specialist in the country to check out our Hypochondrism(is that a word?)--lol...
So, how do some you fine Americans feel about improving the quality of your Health & Education at the cost of more government involvement--is the thought that frightening??!!

Young Indigo, greetings, FlapJ here. I don't kmow wy most Americans and Republicans are so araid of  "compassion" on the part of the government  as being "creeping socialism/communism". yea, why can't the powerful ol USA Provide as system of health and education for all citizens. Not nescessariliy free, but at least much cheaper, because I agree with you that these are rights for all folks. Personnaly I've not much knowledge of Democratic socialism but I'm game to to give it a shake. And bro Indigo, they are all makin' cut backs in those same areas of health and educatin thanks to Bush and his big-business handlers. Fianally in response to last query, about how americans feel about  improving the quality of our health and education sytem at the cost of more government - Is that thought frighteneing?! Well, I've no individual health, nor benefits, pay check to paycheck/ hand to mouth. And since I've mo medical history. So that personal situatiom is rather, I'm not so frightened, but exasperated at the bigbusinesses meteing out their campaign to the masses to produce laws we rarely see or uderstand. At atime when the people of the world are in dire ned of help, The ruling elite(bankers, intrernaionalists, globalists). Weall know that information and technology is readily available to the world. Check out Tom Beardens website @ http://www.cheniere.org. I know the corporations, and internationalst globalist don't have americas best interest at heart, only their own agendy of power. The deliberate suppression of technologies involving enrgy production, and advanced propulsion technologies. It's a grim readin' - Scoll down and read his latest "Threat assessment of Scalar Technologies". Later on Indigo, and hello to all the fellow heretics, much love, Flapjack

Indigo-

you could not be more right. And as a 'fine American' I'll tell you what I say, though unfortunately my opinion is not the opinion of the majority in this country.  The whole 'big government' scare tactic is something drummed up by the repubs/neocons and it's a bunch of bull- for example, here we have a president, W., who says he's all about taxcuts, smaller government, etc, and yet the amount of government spending he's doing with his wars- well it must be unparalleled. Most people in this country dont realize that when they vote for taxcuts etc, or for a president who has the interest of corporations and the ruling class, well, they're voting against their own interests.  And the same goes for the democratic party as well- they are pro-corporation, pro-war (they voted for the war too) and ruling class.

I consider myself a socialist and I'm pretty politically active when I can be. (member of International Socialists Organization- see our paper at www.socialistworker.org ).  My political development has really opened my eyes up to the way this country and the world works.
Unfortunately, the US impacts the entire world and so well-meaning social democratic countries like Sweden or Canada are becoming less socialist and more capitalist in order to compete in the world market (with the US)

I could go on and on but unfortunately I have to do schoolwork (finals are approaching).  You're post was a breath of fresh air. I'm always really interested in talking to folks from Canada & Europe, where they've got it right (or better at least).  One day I will be living in one of those places.  Maybe I'll be an Expatriat? lol. Dont get me wrong - I do love my country or else I would be ambivalent.  I'm just critical of it- something that democracy permits thank goodness. (although with W's patriot act...you never know)

so indigo I'm interested in more of your perspective.
-by the way this political rants forum- what a great idea.

Cheers-
ECHO

Hey Indigo- couldn't agree more!  IMO the whole purpose of a gov't in the first place is to ensure the safety and well-being of the people.  Somehow safety has become solely military might while well-being is more or less totally ignored.

I know the Schiavo thing is another thread but it's such a great example.  Bush is making MAJOR cuts in medicaid, which is where the money has come from to keep Terry Shiavo alive all these years.  The "social" conservatives argue her right to life while the "pro-business" conservatives argue that the gov't shouldn't be in the business of interfering in individuals lives- except in this case.  They want it both ways.

Canada may be going in the wrong direction, but it's certainly not going in as wrong a direction as the US and certainly not as fast.

IMO our gov't needs to put it's primary efforts into elimating poverty- which means providing education and to ensuring that every American has access to quality health care.  In this country the cycle of poverty keeps the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer.  The tax policy favors the rich, those with money can afford education and health care while the poor struggle from paycheck to paycheck and god forbid they get sick!

The problem is that people don't realize it.  They hear "tax cut" and don't understand that it's the rich that get the benefit.  The gov't uses semantics like changing the phrase 'inheritance tax' to 'death tax' and people believe that eliminating the 'death tax' is going to benefit them.  Whereas in truth, the inheritance tax was one way of ensuring a transfer of wealth from the most wealthy to the least wealthy.  How many people need to worry about paying an extraordinary amount of inheritance tax.  It only affects the wealthy, but Bush has convinced the majority of the country that it's in their interest.

The fact is that the republicans control the gov't because they've done a tremendous job in getting people to vote against their own self-interest by deceit and outright lies.  If people understood the facts, our governmental policy would look very different, IMO.

More spending on health and education isn't equivalent to more gov't involvement in people's lives nor is it equivalent to an erosion of privacy and civil rights such as is occuring now.  One can be a socialist or social democrat- wanting the gov't to provide for those most in need while still wanting the gov't off your back when it comes to civil rights and individual decisions- those stances are not incompatible.

The gov't and the wealthy, IMO, have a responsibility to ensure a decent quality of life- including education and health care for those less well off.  This is America- we can certainly afford to make sure that EVERYONE has the opportunity for a decent education and quality health care.  But it's not in the interest of those with the money (who are the same as those with the power) to do so.

Marco
