Patterns

Newsletter Cartoon

Patterns

Some people are always broke! They win the lottery, and before you know it they need a bank loan to buy a hamburger.

Some people are always late! They can get up at five am to be at work by nine, and at ten fifteen they are still searching the house for car keys and washing their socks!

Some people make friends wherever they go.
Some people make money wherever they go.
Some people always get sick on vacation.

Why? Because we have subconscious "patterns" of behaviour. Most things we do, we do without thinking - as with breathing or driving a car. We spend all our cash automatically, we make ourselves late automatically.

Now here's the good news ... you are not "your patterns". You can change your subconscious habits with visualisation and mental rehearsal.

Professional sportspeople all use visualisation. Why? Because our brain cells can't tell the difference between a real and an imagined experience. When we visualise perfect behaviour, we program our brain cells for better performance.

It's easy. You simply close your eyes, take some deep breaths and relax, and play mental movies of you performing perfectly. Practise your golf swing in bed. Rehearse your public speaking on the bus - but in your mind!

You might regularly picture yourself as organised or confident. Over weeks and months you'll notice the difference.

It's so simple and unsophisticated. It's so unsophisticated that it's hard to believe it works.

It does work. Ask Pete Sampras.

IN A NUTSHELL

No one has to stay stuck. If you are serious, you can change old patterns. You're a human being - you're not a tree.

(You can read more about improving performance with mental rehearsal in "Being Happy!")

What a wonderful concept!  I have another one I use to keep track of things , I always put them back where I put them; and that is where they can always be found.  I am going to use this Pattern from you Jim Jim on my being Confident and organized ( in paperwork area) , I  have a lot of paperwork to go through.  I am not looking forward to it, but after a few sessions in my mind; it will be much easier.  Thanks for the  post idea. : )  hapykjk2

Why? Why? Why?

"As long as one keeps searching, the answers come." -- Joan Baez

Asking ourselves 'why?' helps us delve deeply into our main motives -- why we do what we do. This process helps us go deeper into our reasoning, habits and unconscious beliefs. Once we become aware of our underlying motives, we can choose to change them, if we wish.

Regularly ask yourself, 'Why am I...?' Listen closely for the answer that surfaces in your mind, and write it down. Now look at your answer and ask why again. Continue with this process to reach the true source of your motivation.

"Men are more accountable for their motives, than for anything else...." -- Archibald Alexander
