Frosted flakes and Fruit Loops.  Fruit Loops I find especially disgusting, so artificial but the kids love them.  They now come in 1/3 less sugar and the kids still like them.

My kids are allowed to have a really junky cereal about once every 3 months.  Yup. that's it!

Other than that they eat Cheerios or Rice Krispies and in the winter Ben loves oatmeal (the homemade kind not the sugary, additive-filled one that comes in those little bags).  I just do it in the microwave.  It is not hard.  I may try that thermos method this winter.  Ben also likes scrambled eggs in a mug.  It keeps the eggs warmer and it's fun.  Kate likes her cereal or German pancakes.

Junky cereal is a pet peeve of mine.  I think it's wrong to sell it as breakfast cereal when it is in fact snack food.  Mothers please fight with all your might against this.  Our kids are being pressured and brainwashed by the media into wanting to eat that junk.  And then there are those Dunkaroos -Grrrrrrrrrr!!!

Despite my love of junk food, I don't allow those in the house either.  Occasionally they will talk me into a bag of fake cocoa puffs but my kids LOVE rice krispies.  I wish they would eat healthier cereals since rice krispies are still kind of junky - no whole grains or brown rice and still some sugar but still better than the sugar-coated cereals.  Another good one is frosted mini-wheats - they are not really that high in sugar and are packed with fiber.   They are one of my favorites but those we never buy because they're expensive and mom will finish them off in two days.  When I buy krispy kremes on occasion or when they get to have pop-tarts (usually when we are going on a trip) or end up eating junk food for breakfast, I don't mind much because to me it's the same as eating froot loops and I figure since they don't eat sugar cereal on a daily basis, they can occasionally handle junk.  I personally think that nutri-grain bars and chewy granola bars are almost as bad as sugar-coated cereal - maybe worse since people tend to think they are "healthy."  At least when you give your kids froot loops and cocoa krispies, you know you're giving them crap.

Now if I could just manage to get rid of all candy - every time I throw what we have away, they go to another party (like today) or a friend's parent gives them a bunch.  Halloween's coming too - they're allowed to pretty much eat what they want on Trick-or-Treat nite but then I try to keep it up in a cabinet and dole it out for treats after that.  But I admit they get way, way, WAY too much sugar!!!

Breakfast foods are the worst things out there. At Tim Horton's, the muffins have more fat than the donuts. Even the bran ones! I'm trying to stay away from cereal altogether but my girls aren't big oatmeal eaters. Emily used to LOVE puffed wheat or rice (what's that stuff called? It's so light and comes in a big bag?) Fairly cheap too so I should add that to my shopping list to try again. I'm going to try different hot cereals like cream of wheat and I have this bran stuff that's like cream of wheat but flakier. Also, Red River cereal is a good one. On school mornings, I need to find easy to grab things for the girls to eat in the car so I think I'll make healthy muffins, bagels, toast for them (but no pb and they don't like cream cheese so I'm stuck on what to put on it other than butter.)

Oh, I'm borrowing a waffle maker from my mom. That's another great idea for breakfast. I have a recipe for soya bean waffles. They only call for 1 tbs of sugar for 6-8 waffles!! Of course, there's the toppings you add that could be bad but if I make my own strawberry sauce with very little sugar, that would be good. Pb could go on there too.

O.k., I'm just blabbing on... off to the next.
