Here's one.   Acute Leukemia... when white blood cells run amock and clump up in bone marrow blocking healthy production of red cells... death ensues within just weeks / months, if undiagnosed. Early diagnosis is key to survival. My old classmate and neighbor, a 65 year old lady & her husband went for physicals: husband got a call within days that he had Acute Leukemia. A follow up test revealed that, no.. he was fine: it had been a false positive.  Should have been end of story, but his wife got paler & paler, weaker & weaker & is now near death in an ICU.  Noone thought about the blood vials maybe being mixed up.

omg... what a mess that is Star.

We've got a medical mistake horror going on around here too.  That operation to remove Janie's spleen turned into leaving the spleen but the ostomy bag as a bonus.

Then to top it off the Dr had the nerve to send an added $$$ amount to adjust the bill for the surgery he did..even though he didn't do the one she'd already paid for, but ****ed and did the other instead.

Wanna know how likely it is he'll see the added expense paid?

0..... it aint gonna happen.

Nightmares in the midst of miracles...

I'm flabberghasted that the surgeon asked for that $$$$$$$$, PJ!  I still visualize him as you described, apologizing profusely the next day... then to turn around and BILL for his frightful mistake..??!! He must have feared retribution & now he doesn't? What a prick.

that particular Dr happens to be our least favorite of all (as you can imagine).   Not only did the whole surgery "mishap" occurred, but even at her after surgery appt he didn't even bother to check his work.. (nevermind his office charge was $183)..

On top of that, days go by w/ out a call being returned... if ever.

Friday morning I had to go to his office to pick up a written presciption (the kind they can't call in).  It was supposed to be there at the front desk when I got there, but of course it wasn't.   They had to call the Dr (who was out) and get the OK from him to be sure if that's what he wanted to still give her.  Finally, over 1 1/2  later I head to the pharmacy w/ written script in hand.

Only to get there and find out they can't fill the damned script because they'd forgotten to put the instructions on the script.  The pharmacist said she called and left a message, but she couldn't fill it w/ out further instructions.  When I hear she's left a message, I'm thinking omg.. I'll never get that prescription.. so I get on the phone and start calling the office until I actually get the right human voice to take care of the problem.

By then, I'm on my way to the office for an appt and I had to send someone else to the pharmacy to pick up the prescription much needed by then.

Only took 3 hrs to pick up pain pills... that's all.  I'm wondering how anybody as sick as Janie is would be expected to go thru that sort of rigamaroe just to get the minimum of care needed.

As you can imgaine, I'm non to thrilled w/ the medical community in general.  This is just one of many similiar things that I've witnessed over the past few years.

We can't help but wonder if this substandard care is because of lack of insurance and if those with insurance get better treatment.

That is so wrong..I am so sorry to hear about your friends, Star. I can't believe he had the nerve to ask for $$. He should be sued on malapraxis.

Ok, I just looked it up so I know it's real....     but "malapraxis" sounds like some bones the doc should be strung up by, don't you think?

Things sound so much better in a foreign language, no?

What is the English word for that?  It's when doctors make serious, avoidable  mistakes.

Yes star, it is. Ive never seen a cure for it. Prolonged remission is at best, that one can hope for.

Pj, isnt it so amazing how lacadazical the medical profession is with out lives? I went thru the same type thing trying to get pain meds for Austin last year. Come to find out, AFTER I went to pick up the script, and got it back to the Pharmacy, the stupid doctor forgot to put the strength on the directions! They couldnt do a thing, and we all sat there for hours, waiting for a call back!
I think some of those ah's forgot to take the oath!

hadda take her back to the ER this morning.  They're admitting her (bowel obstruction)

She doesn't even want her "Dr" near her... how do you trust that SOB?

I only hope they're able to get her some relief from the pain she's been enduring on and off for the past couple of weeks..

Thoughts are with her and her entire family & circle of friends this Thanksgiving.

So help me God, I personally know of FOUR people here, near to me, who are dying this Thanksgiving week... 3 of them from cancer.  Two brothers, ages 63 & 59 that I've known all my life..  another lifelong acquaintance who's the subject of this sad and scary thread, as well as my mother.  You might not think this gives us any cause to celebrate the holiday, but the opposite is true... we are detirmined to wring every moment of comfort and joy from it that we are allotted, after attempting attending to theirs.
