Hi everyone! I'm a bargain shopper by nature, I rarely pay full price for anything. I'm not "cheap" but I do like my bargains, especially on high quality items. :-) So I was wondering some of your tips/tricks for saving money. I know alot of you have big families, how are you saving money with the rising gas/food prices? For groceries I use tons of coupons and I shop at the commissary (grocery store on the army base). I got a gal. of milk last night for 2.24!! Plus I use the grocery game for other stores. One store around here had a special on General Mills cereals etc. 10 for $10!! Plus you could use coupons, so I got 10 boxes of cereal for $6. :-) So I keep my eyes peeled for good deals like that. I shop at Kohls department store mostly. They always have sales and with their credit card you get special deals and percents off. We got $300 worth of items the other day for $170. Dh needed new slacks and shoes, I got a big Rachael Ray oval pot, etc. We pay the card off each month, so no interest fees. Something else dh and I do....when we go out to eat sometimes we will order a bigger platter of food and split it. Not only do we save money on eating out, we eat alot less that way! Books....I love books. Since being up here in VA I have discovered on-going library sales. There are 3-4 libraries in this area I know 2 of which have booksales going all the time. So I have picked up books for as little as 25 cents each. When I'm done with them I post them on paperbackswap.com and try to swap them for another book. So, what do you do to save money? |

I love this thread! Gracie, it is wonderful that you are back & healthy! WOOHOO! Going to google David Ramsay. (never heard of him) PudgieTinkie, I think this is awesome: My grocery store is giving a 10% incentive with gift cards. We are going to buy a $300.00 gift card and the store will put $330.00 on it. (I wish I could afford to put more. That's free money!) Wish my grocery stores did the same. Serene, I do this too: Use kids' bedside water they did not drink from night before to water plants. About 15 yrs ago, a friend gave me that advice. She said that if tap water sits out for a night it loses its calcium. (It loses something & I think she said calcium) Better for the plants and their pots. I had a lot of clay pots, that had white rings around the bottom. After trying this, no more white rings/spots. |

Still thinking about plants here. We use our dehumidifier water on plants too. If a plant is sickly or dried out, the water acts like a miracle cure. After a few waterings it completely restores its health. Laundry tips: - For normal wash loads, don't use the full amount of detergent. I use 1/2 or 3/4 of suggested amount. Clothes come out clean.(dh's super dirty work clothes get the full amount)
Got this tip from my Soar Sistas - Once a year I wash & lightly scrub my dryer's lint filter in dishwashing soap, to get rid of the invisible film. First time I did this it cut down my jean's drying time by 20 min.
Another tip from my Soar Sistas |

I'm always looking for ways to save money. Check your vending machine prices for soft drinks. I bet they are high. At my work, they charge $1.25 for a 20 oz. bottled drink. I watch the sale ads, and buy 2 lts. on sale for $1.00. They make fun of me caring in a 2 lt., but I'm the one laughing at how much they are spending. |

This was posted on my State Chat group. I thought I would share it with you all. Homemade Wrinkle Remover “Fill a spray bottle with distilled water; add 1 teaspoon liquid fabric softener (go ahead and use Downey and you’ll even duplicate the fragrance).
Directions: Spray the wrinkled garment using a sweeping motion from about 8 inches away until slightly damp. Tug and smooth away wrinkles. Hang until dry. Use more spray for heavy fabrics or severe wrinkles. For a pressed look, spray fabrics while ironing. "

They make fun of me caring in a 2 lt., but I'm the one laughing at how much they are spending. I used to share a locker with someone who did this, she always had a 2 litre bottle of pepsi max in there. Once a year I wash & lightly scrub my dryer's lint filter in dishwashing soap, to get rid of the invisible film. First time I did this it cut down my jean's drying time by 20 min. . Do the air intake as well, recently my dryer wasn't drying the clothes well enough, when I checked the back of the dryer the intake grill was clogged with lint. I've been thinking of connocting some sort of secondary filter that will somehow clip to the front of the dryer to stop lint flying everywhere. My dryer can't be vented because the entire door is the air outlet so any lint that gets through the filter is blown around the room. About 15 yrs ago, a friend gave me that advice. Leaving water sit would also get rid of chlorine which would also be beneficial to plants |

Cheryl, you are right. It was the chlorine that evaporates. Couldn't remember what it was, just knew it worked. And my plants flourished. lol @ Darlene & Wrinkle remover. I thought you meant wrinkles on your face. Heck, my lil sis use to Prep H on her eyebags. She said it worked. Never tried it myself. |

- Never go grocery shopping hungry
- Take along a water bottle and a snack when I leave home
- I check out Barnes & Noble.com and then go online at local library and put books I want to read on hold
- Get dvd's from library or wait until movie I want to see on tv (I work for Directv so get all movie chs free as a perk--takes 6-12 mos to show up after theatre but no cost)
- Plan all my errands out and route it for less mileage/ time and try to do them all in one day
- Clearance and out of season items-- like when the girls were little I bought them coats for the next year in the spring
- Lists-- saves on not getting impulse buys
- Comparitive shopping-- also many stores will match prices of a competitor
- Make some of my own cleaners/ air fresheners/ etc.-- like I use essential oil drops in baking soda and mix it in and put into a decorative container w/holes in it for bathroom scent.. also essential oil in oil/rubbing alcohol in spray bottle for air freshener, etc (their are many good books at the library on how to do this)..you can make your own bath salts and stuff, too and you know what's going into them
- I think of a way I can use/ reuse stuff... like I had a flower pot that the soil needed emptying. I had a low spot in my yard so I spread the potting soil across it to fill it in.
- Timer on my hose/sprinkler... this is great for me as I would often forget how long it'd be on
- Wait until I have a full load to run washer/ dishwasher
- Use cold water for all wash except sheets/towels
- Air dry most of laundry outside weather permitting
- Weather stripping on windows/doors and insulator pads behind outlets
- Open up window blinds for sunshine when need extra warmth in house, close them to the sun when it gets too warm... Also during summer open up windows in early morning when is cooler to cool down house then shut them when it starts to warm up

Less laundry soap in the washing machine is an easy one to do. I put very little soap in, everything comes out clean. Probably less wear and tear on the clothes too. Used dryer sheets are great for rubbing bug guts off your car! (wet them alittle if needed). |
