I wish I had retail commissions!  Our owner tells us that the profits pay for our customer service (coffee, food spreads, etc) :O(

I think I would be more motivated to sell products if I had commissions.  I do sell products usually only when customers request advice about something or just ask...

I begin with telling them sometimes about which shampoo I am using and why........or when I am adding something to their hair, I will talk about it and then hand them the bottle so they can see it.

If I were a salon owner, I would try and give 10-15% commission.

We get a 10% commission in our shop which is alright as long as your around to right it down they track it though the amounts going through the till as well.  But you only get credit for it as long as you recorded it and you need to sell over $200 worth of product in the month before it applies.  As for the assistants and other staff they do not get commission that helps to pay their wage.  But honestly the motivation to sell the product especially to your regulars/chemical clients is with the right products it helps to maintain their hair which makes your job easier as well.

We get 10% retail commission, but only if we make service commission. It's both an incentive to sell and work hard. It's also a way a business is able to profit. I don't think assistants should get retail commission. It's the production of the stylists that generate money for the salon.

we give 15% commision on retail....but one thing you need to remember....at 15% you are acutuall getting 30% because....the salon has already purchased the product and when you get your commision your 15% is from the total price and the salon is only getting 50% commision...does that make sence?  But I believe we should all get commision...if your salon owner wants to serve refreshments that is her choice..we serve coffee, tea, water and soda because I think we should and I am happy to do that at our cost.

Hello,

My stylists do not receive commission on retail sales under $200.  From $201-500 it is 10% and over $500 it is 15%.  We do not have assistants so I can not help you there.  I suppose if they are the ones styling the hair and recommending products to the client, they should get something.

Good Luck

We have both "renters" and commission, and EVERYONE gets 10% retail commission, but only if they personally talk about the product the guest buys. If someone decides they want something the technician didn't use, like lotion or a candle, the technician gets nothing. Our salon asks that at the end of each service, the technician and places the products they used at the desk and talks about them...this actually makes the stylist appear more professional as well. We also use "prescription pads" as a written record the guest to can keep to refer to later. Prescription pad also has a spot for a recommended timeframe to return back for another service.
Our salon also tracks how much retail each stylist sells, and we try to improve the return, without sounding bossy or greedy. Main thing to understand is if you sell 1 bottle of shampoo (average price $20) per haircut, you just got a $2.00 and hour raise! It's quite easy to sell $100 to one guest, if you believe in the product.
Our goals are 1 piece per client, or $20 per client...and we are rather successful in getting that, which we love. What the stylists love is the commission check after selling product!
