I have a really big beef with our "large manufactures" I was in my local grocery store (Safeway) buying lunch when I happen to see this guy buying American Crew at the check out line. So now I go look at thier hair care area and I find Biolage, Bed head, Paul Mitchell, American Crew, Bio-silk and Abba, So I call to report the diverson to State Beauty Supply and they tell me that the Companies aren't really doing anything about the local diversion and they are more worried about it in the larger picture, In the mean time I lose money to the grocery store while my clients buy their products there, I guess what really makes me mad is that our customers would never buy these products if we hadn't used those products on them.

I had been at a CVS drug store and in the hair product aisle I saw several professional lines.  Sebastian, American Crew, Redkin, and a few others.  I called the hotlines for these products to report it.  They didn't seem to care.  So if they don't really try to stop it what can we do?

This is from part of what a sign says related to this topic where I work. That you should  purchase salon products only in salons. The reason for this is that these products purchased at drug or grocery stores may have been bought from the grey or black market, and could be either counterfeit or contaminated. It's also been to my knoledge that the same products might have been watered down, making them be available at a cheaper price. Having one of these signs in your salons would be a great idea, and very informative to your clients. Enough exposure about it, and the problem might eventually be solved!

Good day everyone! This has been a problem for many years and will continue to cause havoc in professional hair salons unless we scream, shout, make a fuss about it until they are sick and tired of listening to us complain. In my salon, I have a huge 8'x4' mirror that I use for advertising. On the one side, printed on BRIGHT paper, is a complete description of product diversion. When my client sits in my chair, the first thing they look at is all the new stuff I have stuck to my mirror. So, they read. And they read some more. Then they say, "Really? I didn't know that!" (most of them, anyways) We need to educate our clients about all of it. One client of mine even went as far as to purchase some Joico product from Shoppers Drug Mart and bring it to my salon so we could compare it to the Joico I SELL. Well, she was amazed at the difference! It smelled the same, but the consistency was very different. She said, "Oh wow! You were right! They have fooled around with this stuff!" She took it back to the store and got her refund. Like I said, the only thing we can do is educate our clients.  A g'friend of mine has a display of 'real' products and 'fake' products at her salon. She can't get over what people are saying. "I thought I was buying the same stuff!" Even the fine print on the packaging is different than the products we get from our distributors. There are many ways to teach our clients about product diversion; we just need to get agressive about it.

I have sold nexxus for yrs & now it is going national. This is the way I was told it happens. Nexxus sells stock, if not enough stock is sold then the stockholders complain. Therefore, to get stocks up they sell to the ventures, wallgreens & ect. Then I was left hold the bag on inventory that was going to be sold at walmart for less than I could buy it. Another, problem is the sale reps, our nexxus rep has had the bottom drop out on him.

You're right scruples, it's been confirmed. Walmart has a big sign out that's saying Nexxus is coming soon. That was the first professional product that I can remember. It's really sad this has to happen huh?

Hello everyone! I have been in this business for over 30 years and diversion has always been here and always will be. Now we have internet sales to contend with. Guess what that means for salon sales. If they can't stop diversion in stores what do you think they can do about web sales???? Fight back! Go online with your products!!

At my salon we carry Aveda and Matrix products.  Just before christmas i was in winters and i found a ton of matrix, joico, crew, tigi amoung others... i went back to the shop and told my manager what i found and we called our distributer and complained they told us that they already knew about it and that there was nothing that they could do!!! I was talking to my coworker and she said that she has found matrix in supperstore and safeway as well.  Then one day at work i was styling a clients hair using my t3 flat iron, she had said that she was going to buy one from me on a previous visit... i started to talk to her about ordering one in for her and she told me she didnt need it anymore she found the same one at winters i was dumbfounded i told her that it couldnt be the same iron... so when i was done with her i ran to winters to see for my self sure enough there they were... for only $99 i couldnt believe it seeing as i paid almost $150 for mine when i came out... so needless to say i once again called the owner of my distributer and freaked out im selling my client a $300 flat iron and they come in and tell me they got if for $99!!!!!! its so frustrated with this whole situation.  The worst part is she wasnt even tellling her reps that the irons were in the stores so when i was talking to him about it he was clueless...

Hi Everyone I don't post often but also have a bit of info on this diversion.... I just pulled the entire line of Redken out of my Salon.  I too am very upset over finding it in other stores.  And to make matters worse there is an ad in the over the counter Celebrity Hairstyles magazines that advertises you can get Redken at your local mass retailer!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It's in print. It's in the magazine!  I called and they said they would look into it.  I haven't heard a word since that has been three weeks!  Needless to say I have never had such poor representation of a professional product in my entire life.  I had to call everytime I wanted to place an order.  Apparently if you are not a Redken Gold Salon than you are not anybody.  I could not even get the company to send me a price list after three requests.  When I call they always promise to fax one and it never came.  I am done with Redken. As for the rest of them being over the counter.  Do they really think that we are that stupid that we do not realize they are back dooring there own products....They have to.  They say that they now have special numbers on there bottles so they can trace each package.  Then why do they keep reappearing???  As professionals we need to all get together and start writing letters and demanding answers.  I'm starting tomorrow, we will see what Redken has to say on my previous call, and I will explain how the line is totally removed from my Salon.  Also I am curious are there any e-bayers out there?  Has anybody put there professional products on e-bay and had there hands slapped?  Or have you heard of that happening to anyone.  I am very curious, my guess is no.  I also belong to another company that has it's strict guidelines it is a fortune 500 company and worldwide.  They have very stringent rules and one is no e-bay.  Yet there is so much of it on e-bay it is unreal.  Now when you have a district manager that is awarded sales based on your profit are they going to turn you in?  No Way, instead they will turn the other way.  Is this what is happening with our Professional lines?  So who regulates all the little TV commercials we hear and the write ups on controlling diversion.  Maybe we should contact  the Attorney General's office and see who is telling the truth and who is not.  Is this called fraud, miss representation of products, Bait and Switch?   As professionals who promote these lines our reputations are on the line and I think we deserve answers. Sorry to go on and on but I for one am very discouraged. We are professionals and deserve that respect.
Susan

diversion will always be here. they make too much MONEY on it. they all say it is some one else doing it. that is why i try and use more high end underground products.
if i see it in the drug stores and a rep tries to sell it to me they get the boot. just remember we have the POWER, they need us we do not need them. later.

This is the problem with diversion, it's supply and demand. There is a high demand for these products and these companies can't rely on the stylist in our industry to sell their products.I mean how many times have you heard stylist say that they are not salesman. One of the biggest problems for salon owners is trying to get their stylist to retail product. Did you know that a client who has just had their hair done will buy product within 24 hrs of getting it done? They want to buy product. Why aren't they getting it from us? Why are they going to the supper market and paying almost a dollar more for unguaranted product? It's because we are not closing the sale. We need to take back our industry! We know what they need, not some cvs sales clerk. If we continue in the way we are handing product sales I'm afraid we will lose all of our professional lines to the open market.
If you are trying to find a professional line that has not been diverted , I would try Aquage. It's a wonderful line! Their packaging is very spa like, really nice. Theirs is one of the best hair sprays that I've ever used. They  do not carry a color line but their wet line is great for use and retail. Aquage is very serious about diversion and is commited to selling only to indepentenly owned salons, stylist and day spas. You will not find them in any chain salons or retail stores.
Remember to sale, each client should be leaving your chair with at least one product that they are taking home with them.

We use Aquage at our salon here in Erie, PA and it is not well known just yet around here.  It is an awsome product.  It is not normal for me to like a whole line of products, but this one is very nice.  You may not find it on the shelves of your local supermarket just yet, but it is on ebay.  We have called and informed the company about it and they did seem to care and said they were going to take care of the situation.  Not sure what they did about it since you can still buy it there, but it is a nice product.

Hi, guys it's been awhile since I've been here and have to say I do agree. I'm  bad at closing the deal i love the prodcuts I use and I tell the cleint about it but I forget to ask them about it even your regulars. For me personally I know that part of the problem it that I booth rent so the client comes in we do the service set up the next appointment and pay for the services all at my station and then some times the don't even go up front to leave. I also get in the habit of not walking up to the front with them because I want to clean and sweep up to get ready for my next client. So we do need to make that effort to make sure they get from us. Also AQUAGE is by far the best styling line I've used, i love it!!! .
