Well, we're down one more stylist. It was the young girl who walked out on me that one day. Now she has left us all a hole, that we are working hard to fill. I had to work alone on Sunday, because the manager wasn't home to get the message she wasn't going to be there, and there was at least 20 names signed in on the sheet within the first half hour of me opening up. Of course more than half those names were undone by the end of the day, and the manager didn't make it in there until an hour before closing. Between the phone ringing, and people walking in, it was just too much for me to bear. This also leaves me Friday and Saturday night by myself. Good thing the manager took an hour break and came back at 5 to work the rest of the night with me tonight! There will also be some switching of schedules tomorrow night too. Tuesday nights, I could pretty much handle. It got me so discouraged lately, that I'm starting to collect phone #'s and email addresses of my customers and thinking of going into booth rental if I could find one. The worst part of it was hearing from the manager that this girl didn't like working with me! I gave this girl everything I had, getting her started in the business and helping her. I did everything in my power all the time to make her comfortable, and make things easier on her. We even used to go to lunch together on Thurdays! I can't even begin to tell you how hurt this has made me. We can't even find anyone who wants to work, no one has applied. I would hate to walk out on the others now, but I can only take so much!

Wow Amy - i'm sorry - that really sucks. My theory instructor was
discussing booth rental as an aside the other day in class and because you
have the clients - i think (in my brief exposure to the industry on the
other side of being a client - lol) that might be the way to go. Does your
current employer provide any insurance, etc. benefits? There's so much to
consider in a decision like that. Good luck - Vall

wow, i really feel for you.
my thoughts are if you have the clients, i would go to booth rental. all you have to worry about is you and yours, however you do have a lot more responsiblity for your own buisness. i'm sorry , but my thoughts are you shouldn't worry about that place you work at, if you decide to leave, you will not make or break that place, i would just be fair and give them enough notice to let them find stylist to fill their chairs, just be prepaid that when you give them notice, they may ask you to leave right away, i know from past experience. you have to really ask your self what would be the best for you and your career.
hope that helps.

The company that I work for, does offer some kind of health insurance, but it didn't seem to me like it was much worth it at the time, since I don't go to doctors much, and it would just be too expensive. The clientel, is up in the air right now-it seems to me like I have alot, but I am afraid that the majority won't follow, this is in a convienent location. And I think we have all seen or experienced this one time or another. The biggest job for me right now is gathering up all those potential followers, and organizing it. I should have started doing that years ago, so this will take some time anyway. But, I don't really think they will ask me to leave right away, they need all the help they could get. We're open 7 days a week, and only 4 of us. The worst thing that could happen if I leave is that they will have to close a few days. One of my customers said that this place is fine if you're a trainee, but I should be on my own now. It's a scarry thought. Thanks for the support!

I know this is an old post but... may I ask where you work, if this hasn't been solved already?  IWhen I was first out of school I worked at a supercuts, great place for someone outta school wanting a steady job,  I moved up to management within 3 months, not because of my wonderful experience just outta school but, because I was the only one left in the store that could be trusted with money, and a key!  Sad!
I have found that the chain stores in my personal experience, chains,  just use people like warm bodies to fill the chairs,  pay you an ok hourly salary but expect way too much in the form of productions. So say if you are making $8.00 which is what I did then, you do 4 haircuts an hour even 3 they have made depending on the cost of a average $12 haircut they make appx. alot of money off you. And they wonder why people walk out on them.  The stylist feels why should I work my a** off for this amount when I can work here for X amount.  Or I have seen this one before...
I worked a mall chain very trendy cute alternative one called mia and maxx...they give you 40% comm, or min wage, $5.15 an hr which ever greater.  So then they hire like 2 people for evey station and have overlapped schedules, then they work like 7-8 girls at a time all  depending on walkins. So you only are able to do say 2 haircuts for that day...rotation thru 8 girls taking turns, you have done $50 bucks, but remember you only make 40% of that $50. So if your books are only semi full you average say $50 a day you'd be better off with the $5.15 you'd make more off that $5.15 in a 40 hour work week.  So at that place you'd be better off sitting on your stuff than doing anything!
So the point is, if I have one, to my stories is this is a hard business and really when you decide to leave a job the grass is only sometimes greener on the other side, and two do the math it is $$$$ in you wallet. And three only a small percentage of people get rich in this multifacted business.  I guess I am jaded now.  But I have worked in many avenues to this business in my 9 years in it so I finally opened my own shop. Which is even harder.  Good luck!

P.S. I say take the clients and run, but be prepared they probably won't follow, only some... but keep your prices the same for these people for a while then slowly raise prices.  But that is an entirely different thread.

That right, I didn't offer a followup! I guess I haven't had the need to vent in a while (knock on wood). Well, I work for Regis Corp, the Smartstyle division, and since then, we had one girl returning, not the one in the origanal thread, but another one who returned part time. We also have a new stylist who I've worked with before at another company I worked for which closed the salon down after 2 years, she was manager of that salon at the time. And let me tell you, the attitude is way better than anyone I've ever encountered including myself! She said she wants to retire here! You see, this comes down to positive attitude! It's true, the grass is always greener! While some salons offer you better hours and higher %'s, This one you could count on for a steady flow of customers, not to mention social security retirment funds! This setup is exactly what primpsalon has explained in her second example (salary over commission). While it may seem harder to make money, the fact is that you could, if you are willing to do the work, and EARN your 50%. I have explained more about that in one of the thread that Waiyi started. After all, if it were easy it wouldn't be called work right? Commission is always greater, and I have my set schedule, and I have worked at private salons before, and this is the first one I swear, that was the busiest, and I am guaranteed a steady paycheck. While it may be tempting to expand, or open my own shop one day, if I could be guaranteed all my clients will follow me, which I doubt, it just makes more sense to stay at this place for now.

I know this is  a very old post, but I just want to see how things are going for you starliteny and if you're still at the same place. It's hard to cope with the stress of being shorthanded, believe me I delt with it for three months being only me and another stylist. Thank God that my area supervisor would work to give me a day off. It's finally better since one girl came back from maternity leave and i hired two more stylists.

Yes, I'm still there, and things were going better for a while, and we had more than a full staff! Then, as soon as summer hit, we're now down 2 more, one that moved back to Florida, and one that took a medical leave. What's making it really hard now, is that the manager's husband just passed away on Sunday, and she had to take off for a few weeks. I'm trying to help her as much as possible with helping taking care of the shop and keeping her from worrying, and somehow I have to put in a shop order over the weekend, and I know it's going to be busy. Once the manager and the stylist on medical leave come back, things should run more smoothly. Thanks for asking by the way!
