For some of us, retirement isn't too far away, for others it's still a few years down the road. You've worked hard for those 30 plus years. Provided all that was needed for your family, be it neccesities or material items to provide enjoyment for your family and gone without someting you yourself really wanted. You gave your kids everything they could need to get them started on their own paths in life. Now, do you enjoy your retirement and the funds you have for it, doing whatever makes your day, wekk, month, year, or do you spend sparingly so that your kids have a huge chunk of cash when you die? Me, I'm gonna die broke.
Opinions?...Let's hear em.

To be honest with you, I won't be leaving much money when I die.  I have been a single parent for the last 20 years, and have scraped by on little, and STILL managed to save a little in a retirement account, and that is for ME!!!  For later, when I can enjoy a little me time.  I deserve it, I've earned it, and by golly I'm looking forward to it.  I might spend some on the kids while I'm still around, but I'm not leaving it to them in my will.  If I had much money I probably would leave some to the children, but my meager retirement wouldn't accomplish much for them at this point so it's MINE....ALL MINE!!!!

does that make me sound bad?

Hmmm... I think it's wonderful if people can afford to do both... BUT... like Coco, I was a single Mom for several years... In the first years with my first daughter, I had too much pride to allow anyone to financially provide for my daughter and I and when my second marriage split up when my second daughter was 10, I went on with very nominal help from her father... Being of generous nature and not-very-smart-head, I thereafter invested in a couple of poor relationships and failed to do anything but keep my rubber on the road while I supported EVERYbody... And now, 4 years after the last daughter has flown and is doing well, here I am struggling to get up... But with dignity and pride quite intact... thank you very much... I may leave this world poor as a church mouse but I will have the dignity of being able to say, I ALWAYS loved for love's sake alone... That to me, is power!

And whether or not, I am able to give my kids or grandkids a legacy of finance remains to be seen... But I would hope that their memories of me are NOT those of a mother who "bought" them but rather of one who loved, nurtured and believed in their own ability to fly high in this life...

Do I think you should feel bad Coco?  No damn way!!!  You go Girlfriend!!!

Do I think parents owe it to their kids to baby them along or to keep doling out regardless of the fact that kids have reached their age of maturity?  No... part of maturing is to learn how to work hard, value a penny and reap what they sow... What we don't teach our children, the world will...

On my father's death a few years ago, we were all quite astounded that he had been able to save a couple thousand dollars... For a man who had never had a nickel in his pocket for more than 5 minutes that was amazing!  With my small share, I bought the silver watch I now wear because I knew that if he could speak to me, his message would be "Do not waste time... life is short"... And THAT, is enough for me to remember him every time I glance at my wrist.

If I can leave something, I will... But... my children would not WANT to feel that I had sacrificed the happiness I may know in the last years of my life and I would not want them to have to carry that with them after I am gone...

So Top... my answer to your very good question is... I am going to enjoy my retirement to the best of my ability and love the fact that I don't have to buy my kids to feel their love...

Not having kids, I guess the answer isn't quite relevant to me; we still need to sit down with a financial planner and figure out how much I need to retire (and it ain't gonna be Freedom 55, I'll say that much).  I do have money in RRSP's (largely incited by company savings plans, not to mention the settlement from my "money purchase" pension fund when I was laid off a few years back), but the question is whether what's in there will outlast our life expectancies.  I expect I may yet die broke, partly due to the fact that the Canada Pension Plan will be bust from all the baby boomers that came before me. (Born over ten years after the end of WW II, I think of myself as "Generation W" because I was too young to participate in the revolution of the Sixties, but old enough (just) to be aware of what was going on.)  Either that, or I may decide that if the money won't last, I shouldn't try so hard to get old, and get a little reckless with my health in my older years... heck, the health care system seems to be encouraging us to do just that by default...

What's left, if anything, will go to surviving family, good friends, and good causes.
