I know it's only October, but 1 short month away is Nov. 11th. I trust, most of us still remember what that stands for? So, while it is fresh in my mind, here's my opinion entry for this week..
We are at a time now, where our veterans from WW2 are all but gone, leaving no one except the historians, if you will, to relay to us, what it was all about and what it was like. I for 1 had an uncle who served in the Candian Armed Forces Armoured Car Division. I will always remember the storys he "chose" to share with me and my children. I thanked him for this and what he did for me and my family.
As a youngster, I can recall when on Nov. 11th, for the whole day, nothing was sold to the public, with the exception of eggs, bread and milk as they were the essentials. If you sold anything else, you were breaking the law and would be fined. Why was this done? It was done out of respect and the memory for those who served and sacrificed to keep us free. I didn't get it then, but I do now.
Fast forward 60 years:
Everything is open and for sale now, booze, gas, smokes, (today's essentials)to a point where sales may even be put on to attract the consumer to go down town and spend money. So much for respect, honouring and memory. To those that permitted this to happen, I say hang your heads in shame. It is my opinion, that the governments should re-activate this long lost and past practice.
Just my opinion......nuff said.

I could not agree with you more Top!  People have grown way too comfortable with the peace we are blessed to live in and many could care less about the soldiers who gave up their lives and good health to earn that for us.  What many people don't realize is that many of those soldiers returned home all screwed up and unable to re-connect with normal life.  Not all but many... My father was one of the returning soldiers who was told by his sergeant on the day of his release that he wasn't to even try to talk with civilians about what he had been through during his 5 years of active service overseas in WWII... and he never did...

My memories of the Remembrance Days of my childhood when my Dad was home were of watching him grow tearful as he watched the legionnaires lay wreaths on the monuments.... My father was not a man to cry but he came awful close in those quiet moments...

The government should be plenty ashamed of a lot of things concerning the honour we owe our war vets... Not only have we lost Remembrance Day as a stat, but even tho' the donations still flow into the Legions, the Last Post Fund, designed to bury veterans of war only covers the part of the funeral expenses that couldn't be dragged out of the vet's bank account at the time of his death... And they are basic expenses!

The government did nothing to stem the grief and depression experienced by returning soldiers... Those were our fathers and we now live with the legacy of the government's sociopathic nature as some of us also struggle with depression from our own childhoods at the hands of those fathers...

But I guess if they can rip God out of our schools, it shouldn't surprise us to find Remembrance Day gone!  What's next?  Christmas???

well, as a deffendant for the people in the top vs people case, i'm afraid the concept of war has escaped us.  I remember as a young lad watchin the parade with my grapa leading a group of men whome he served with, down the one street of town toward the flag and memorial.  War he would tell me is something he hoped i would never have to see or be affected by.  To date i think, this is the popular outcome of a population who see nov 11 as a day off and pay little or no reguard to the sacrifice or of the why.  I myself am fairly ignorant about what sacrifices of war time mean since really there is no 'remembering', as of 1974 we were just gettin over the hippies.  Since there is really no remembering for myself, i like to thank God and the great beyond for the present.  The now.  i think this has only underscored your post, Toppers

Well put "Top". I can remeber those days also. It is now not what it once was. Is it because there are so few veterans left. The war memorial here in Ottawa has since the installation of "The Tomb of the Unknow Soldier" drawn much larger audiences. Since I go there every year I can attest to this. The thing that I have noticed is that many more young people (16 to 28 lets say) have been attending the ceremony and they have been showing their respect by breaking out in applause when the vet's march past.

As far as out politicians are concerned I feel that the 11 th
of November should be a National holiday that would require the closing of all stores and business's. While I don't think it will increase the number of people who attend, everyone would know that it is a holiday dedicated to the memory of those who gave so much so that we could live in freedom.

As far as my children are concerned they all know why we attend the service each year.
We now have a new generation of soldiers who have given their all for freedom in Afganistan and Iraq and unfortunately there will be more casualties before this "War on terrorism" is over.

Cut short again...

to get on with it, this new war is going to be a long one and with 40 plus soldiers dead already this generation is going to be affected. We are going to see a new date on the side of the memorial ( Septeber 2001 to ???) the only question left now for us is haw many men and women will give their lives before its all over.

My only other point here is that I think our education system has dropped the ball. With history no longer a manditory subject, (in ontario schools at least) our young are not learning about the two world wars, why they were fought or what the cost would have been had so many not given their all. Unfortunately these lessons are needed if we ever intend to put an end to war as a means of solving disputes.

Thanks Top for bring this topic up.
