Healing The Inner Child -
Removing blocks that prevent us from connecting with Spirit!

Spiritual Medium, Teacher and Grief Counselor
SUSAN K. SANDERFORD
Author of "Conversations With Mama"

I know the goal for just about everyone is a desire to become more open to "hearing" spirit, whether connecting with loved ones who have crossed over or being more receptive to messages from your spirit guides and helpers.

I put "hearing" in quotes because spirit speaks to us in many forms.

They put thoughts into our heads?sometimes we can hear audible words or sounds…they also express themselves through emotions (feelings)…sometimes even communicating to us through other people, animals, movies, songs, well placed rainbows, found pennies and the like.

What then blocks our ability to receive these communications?

When I first began to open to my mediumship abilities about eight years ago, my guides told me that one of the main barriers to receiving messages, was internally stuck (repressed) emotions from childhood.

Unexpressed angers, sadnesses, and humiliations that literally got stuck in my body.

Do you remember those Drano commercials where they show you the kitchen sink pipes?
They're all clogged up with dirty grease, hair, food, grime. The water just can't get through.

Picture yourself as the pipe. Your clogs are those unreleased emotions that are left from childhood. Those clogs, those unreleased emotions lead to depression, and both physical and emotional illness

They are literally physically stick in your being. They were caused by hurts and wounds experienced in our growing up years.

Many of us grew up feeling unloved.

Some of us were emotionally abused.

Some had parents that were cold, uncaring and distant. Not knowing how to reach out in love.

May experienced physical or sexual abuse.

Perhaps others of us had siblings that treated us poorly

Or perhaps our school experiences were not the greatest.

All of these happenings and situations caused us to have emotional wounds that we've carried into our adulthood. Unless they are identified and released, we remain clogged and wounded.

These repressed emotions cause that off-and-on depression you experience. They cause us to improperly react to life experiences and relationships with anger, hurt or pain.

In all cases when life seems to be one emotional upheaval after another, one reoccurring negative patter after another, it is because the wounds from our childhood have not been addressed and healed.

As children, we didn't know how to handle our emotions, or set boundaries. We probably couldn't speak up for ourselves, or protect ourselves.

You likely were not allowed to express your anger without being further chastised for your "emotional display!"

In most cases if we spoke our mind or stood up for ourselves, we were punished.

Is there any wonder many of us are still trying to cope with those hidden wounds and hurts, while not understanding what's really going on?

These are the things that have clogged our pipes, blocking the free flowing of spirit in our lives. Blocking clarity and understanding. Water represents Spirit that flows through our very being.

Is there any wonder that many of us grew up with low self-esteem issues, believing we were unworthy of love, or anything good in our lives?

We were taught these untruths - AND WE BELIEVED THEM!

When my spirit helpers began to guide me through this healing process to clean out MY clogs, they shared it would need to be a two-pronged effort on my part. A one-two punch if you will (an effort that I could not complete on my own).

I was told to ask the Holy Spirit to act as my Drano. Inviting Spirit to come in and help me identify the wounds, and then help me express and release the repressed emotions.

Secondly, was to work in changing my belief system? to challenge the beliefs that the negative words and actions of others cause me to believe were true.

People like parents, siblings, classmates, uncaring spouses and the like.

They taught me to believe that I was not worth anything…not loveable, not deserving, not capable of love and happiness…that I was stupid and wouldn't amount to anything.

You MUST challenge and change those beliefs.

You must get to the point where you see them as NOT true.

The truth is they are illusions caused by words and actions of others. As kids we accept them as true, because we don't know any better. As adults, we know better, but our inner child is still holding on to the illusion, and in truth it's our inner child that has most control over our emotions, and the way we react to people and situations.

If (s)he’s not healed, we keep making the same mistakes.

In a book he's working on (husband Milt), gives a great analogy of how this happens. Milt was driving through Downingtown PA many year ago, and he saw a small circus setting up in a large parking lot. He pulled over rand checked it out.

There was a large elephant he felt empathy for, so he spoke to the trainer as to how it was being treated. As he approached, Milt noticed the only thing holding back that elephant, was a rather thin rope tied around it's leg and connected to a stake in the ground.

He asked the trainer how that rope could possibly hold the elephant back if he decided he wanted to break free and go for a walk.

"Oh, that's not a problem" shared the trainer.  "When the elephant is a baby and just learning to stand, we use very heavy chains to keep it in place. The elephant remembers that!

“He remembers the pain involved when he tried to get free. After a while he stops striving for freedom because he "knows" it isn't attainable.

“Since that memory never leaves him, now we can use the thinnest of ropes because the elephant still believes he is chained with that thick metal link chain. He has been trained to stop fighting?BR>
A short time later it came to Milt,  that the early negative beliefs, the hurts, the wounds
that go to make up our belief in ‘who?and ‘what?we are,  are just like those Baby elephant Chains.

They are illusions in reality, but very real to our inner child.  Too painful to deal with, much less fight against.

One thing that helped me in this area of being willing to challenge my old illusionary beliefs, was receiving a book called "Loving What Is" by Byron Katie. It will help you!

You MUST challenge those beliefs.

Getting back to healing the inner child wounds -- we must go back into our painful memories an allow ourselves, to feel the feelings that we could not express as children, and express them now.

To heal, we must feel and release what we have not allowed ourselves to feel and release from the past.

So here's how to start healing those old wounds.

Start by writing down the issues in life that cause you anger, pain hurt, disappointment etc.

If you are depressed, this is always unreleased anger that needs to be addressed. If you are angry, be angry, but do not take that anger out on another person. Spirit has shared that the best way to clear anger is to get a plastic baseball bat. We call it Spirit's Baseball Bat Therapy.

Go into your bedroom, put a pillow on your bed, and make believe that pillow is the person or situation that's brought up your current anger. Then beat the heck out of that pillow. Scream, rage and whack away. Curse words work really well. Pretend that pillow is the person you are angry at and let them have it.

What this does is move the anger energy through and OUT of your body.

After you have released the anger toward the present issue, take a deep breath and ask Spirit to bring up the memories from childhood that caused you to be angry in this situation.

Although the current hurt triggered your anger, there is always something deeper that needs to be addressed and healed. It might be a memory of when your mom or dad gave you a whack for something that you did not deserve.

If that's the case, that pillow becomes your mom or dad, and now it's your turn.

So you see, no matter how seemingly insignificant the memory, if there is pain attached to the memory, the feelings need to be felt and released to heal our lives.

Each day ask Spirit to be with you. My daily prayer upon rising is:

Holy Spirit, if there are any unhealed wounds in me, that prevent the
Spirit of God to flow freely through me, bring them up this day so they can be healed.

It's a daily process- but so well worth it. It gets easier and easier, and most importantly,
life gets better and better. You CAN heal! I hope this has been helpful.

Through Susan's gift of mediumship she has learned from her guides the importance (as well as the techniques) of healing childhood wounds in order to more easily move forward on the spiritual journey.

Her first book, ‘Conversations with Mama! (If This Is Heaven Why Are the Kids Still Calling?),?was written to share the incredible story of her initiation into mediumship. It's a view of the afterlife by one who lives there.
