I am part of a group of 135 practitioners and other interested parties testifying before the White House Commission on Complimentary and Alternative Medicine in New York tomorrow.  This commission is on a fact finding tour of the country looking at the way alternative healing is practiced and will report it's findings to the Congress when all of the testimony is heard.  It is the fear of many practitioners that they will recommend legislation to license and have mandatory state by state control of these practices.  In our testimony, we will advocate that for many of us, these practices are a fundamental part of our spiritual beliefs and are protected from government intervention under the "Establishment Clause" of the First Ammendment to the Constitution.  I will report back to you on the results of the hearings.  Anyone desiring further information on the commission can visit their website at:  http://whccamp.hhs.gov/index.html

Blessings, love and light...

I am of two minds on this subject on the one hand it is about time.  All i takes is one con srtist to rip off alot of people whihc gives everyone a bad name at least if there is a level of quality control then there recourses to take in the event of fraud and the industry as a whole is protected.  On teh other hand I would never expect the gov't to be a good organization to decide what controsl should be in order.  So its is a bit difficult.  But in an age where people will shell out 100 dollars for a 30 one hour healing in some cases some standard is a necessary evolution of popularity.

it further occurs to me that it is only a fundamental part of your spiritual practice if you dont charge for it.  If it is free then legislation is not necessary cause well its free.  And if you mess someone up they can always sue.

wow the site has nothing on their findings so far i guess that is to be expected.

The Commission has been charged with addressing:

Research on CAM practices and products
Delivery and public access to CAM services
Dissemination of reliable information on CAM to health care providers and the general public
Appropriate licensing, education, and training of CAM health care practitioners
so thats their mandate looks pretty good to me on the surface but then looking at whos on teh commission we find regular doctors and proffesionals, an accupuncturist, alternative health proffessionals, a qigong master, a native american healer (i assume healer), etc.  Sound slike an excellent mix of various health practices and methodologies.   The only complaint i would have really is that licensing and education are always way overpriced.  But that is a socail woe of north america which should be addressed in the mean time why would alternative medicine be left untouched and unlicensed?

To answer Intense's question, no it's not televised.  These are local hearings around the US.  There may be some spot news coverage, but I doubt it will be national.

To answer Witan's questions and comments:

Yes there are charlatans and frauds in every aspect of life...and the same caviat applies to consumers of alternative and complimentary modalities as it does to consumers of any "product"--Let the buyer beware!  However, the majority of alternative healing practitioners that I have met are barely scraping out a living.  Most of them are well-trained, well-intentioned loving and spiritual people who do this work as their avocation rather than vocation.  I personally do most of my Reiki work pro-bono.  I am fortuate enough to make a comfortable living that affords me the opportunity to give this healing to those in true need and without the means to pay for it.
Ostensibly, this commission is not adverserial to the alternative-complimentary community.
However, they do represent the medical and governmental establishment.
We actually welcome scientific evaluation of alternative and complimentary practices.  For those practices already requiring formal licensing (accupuncture and invasive touch therapy)we strongly support the move to have them covered by medical insurance.
What we really want to avoid is having energy work, such as Reiki, governed and controlled by those who do not understand or appreciate its spiritual ramifications.  There are already bodies of reputable, high integrity people in place to self govern these modalities.  And finally, for those of us who practice this as part of our spiritual path, we wish to continue to excercise our First Ammendment rights to do so.
We are entering an era in which our right to think freely may again be challenged and it is up to all of us to stand firm, with solidarity, spirit and love.

Blessings, love, light and freedom

what bodies of self regulating people and who validate s their high standards?  energy healing is used elsewhere in the world and falls under regulations by government and institutions yet still works.  Does teh consumer in your equation have no rights?  yes teh buyer should beware and one means of being ware is to be aware and to enact group power through the government (an imperfect system especially with a republic but astill)  It is great that you do this pro bono sometimes but if it is a spiritual practice then you shopuld always do it pro bon and then accepot donations if you are successful in teh consumers eyes.  Regulation wshould not interefere with a spiritual healer unless it is to outlaw the practice all together.  Further not regulating and not providing consistent education resources enforces the doctrine that healers are likened to gods with special gifts and powers that are not available to anyone higtening the the ego of teh practitioner whihc is a payment even if it isnt money.  Further as stated one of the members is a qi gong master another is a dtcm they both use energy as a major part of their practicce and in china it is part of teh entire health care system, are you suggesting that rather thna regulating energy work and possibly making it open to greater awareness and acceptance and possible integration into mainstream healthcare is bad?

Witan:

I clearly stated my position...a position that is shared by every member of the New York Coalition on Alternative Healing. We are not opposed to integrating spiritual healing into mainstream medicine.  We are opposed to the licensing and regulation of spiritual practice.
People pray for others to get well and the effectiveness of this has been scientifically studied and documented.  Should we require people who pray for others to get well to be licensed and regulated?  That is the point we are making. I can't make it any clearer than that.
I wish you many blessings, love and light.

PS: I am not familiar with the Codex Elementarius.  I did a search on it and found one obscure reference in a hearing on the bio-ethics of certain agricultural practices.  Perhaps you can enlighten us on the significance of this codex.  Thank you.

I dont feel you made your point clear, if it was as simply as the regulation of prayer it would fail simply under freedom of religion and be done with it.  Even if they did choose to regulate religious practice than any true spiritual person would simply ignore the regulation.  Regulation is typically only a factor if a fee is changing hands and its purpose is to protect everyone.  If they honestly have a desire to regulate PRO BONO spiritual healing that requires no invasive procedure and has no record of negative side effects than that enters the realm of outright fascism.  If they were to put forward such an idea i would gladly be up in arms about it and I am not even from teh US.    Admittedly such things do happen in teh world and i am certainly not for them.  But do you honestly believe they will attempt to regulate your right to perform spiritual or religious healing where there is no fee or invasion or risk and teh worst outcome is it doesnt work ???????

so the codex is a big book of drugs there effects and there acceptibility.  Here in Canada the codex is taken very seriously and they are currently studying alternative medicines such as those used in TCM.  the result is here many TCM drugs are being outlawed (seven at a time).  I was wondering what the commission thought of teh codex admittedly the US uses three different manuals to determine the use effectiveness and legaility of drugs giving them the opportunity to pick and choose in that the books have varying degrees of strictness teh codex being teh most strict and considered therefore teh safest.
