The Master "Sometimes it is said: in ascending the stairway a man is not sure of anything, he may doubt everything, his own powers, whether what he is doing is right, the guide, his knowledge and his powers. At the same time, what he attains is very unstable; even if he has ascended fairly high on the stairway, he may fall down at any moment and have to begin again from the beginning. But when he has passed the last threshold and enters the way, all this changes. First of all, all doubts he may have about his guide disappear and at the same time the guide becomes far less necessary to him than before. In many respects he may even be independent and know where he is going. Secondly, he can no longer lose so easily the results of his work and he cannot find himself again in ordinary life." --- Search, p301 I have had some delays in putting together a piece on what a master is. Perhaps it is because I am not a master and perhaps not qualified to write such a piece. Consider in reading this that these are my thoughts on mastership at this stage of my being. I possess a Master's Degree in my field of study. I am also a Reiki Master. The idea behind the university Master's Degree, or even being a Reiki Master, is that someone is at a certain level in a field or profession. Being called a master, however, does not mean that someone is all or everything in that area. What is possessed is a body of knowledge that allows a knowledgeable person to question, to research, and expand in those fields. Becoming a master, in any respect, is a beginning. From the time of being called a Reiki Master, I have learned so much. I have expanded on my skills and, as far as healing goes, I have been pushed by life events to explore much more deeply than I can imagine ever purposely choosing to. My eyes are open. My ears are listening. I often meet many people more knowledgeable, and even students have made very fresh observations that have altered my point of view somewhat. The faith I carry with me continues to grow in surprising ways. I enjoy reading about the many different masters, as they are called. One such master was asked about being welcomed at the airport like a celebrity with the followers cheering. He responded that he does not control the emotions of his students and really enjoys peace and quiet. This always makes me giggle. It reminds me of a typical thing my parents would say when I was small. It is not unusual to meet someone claiming to be a master of a handful of martial arts styles, religions and arts all at the same time. How can someone spend all the time remaining a master of so many different areas? I do not take claims like this seriously and often find people making these claims have many problems to deal with. What is being a master in my eyes? A true master is a master of their own life. The master walks the way of the master on their own path. The enlightened person shows a glow of truth, happiness, wonder, openness and controlled thoughtful power. Although a master is always learning, they are patient, awaiting the knowledge unfolding like watching a flower blossom in a garden. The word master, almost implies having slaves. A master does not create slaves, however, and frees people to also follow their path becoming their own masters. A master is a natural teacher showing us the way in how they live their own life. He or she will not make decisions for you but guide you towards making your own choices. What we experience is cyclical. We learn similar lessons as we go higher applying the simplest of concepts in seemingly more difficult circumstances. A being is born an infant who learns to count. The infant grows into a child and can approach math and sciences. The child becomes an adult and can apply this knowledge independently for their personal finances and in their work area. The adult then grows into the wise elder still learning lessons and progressing into each stage. Perhaps they are a CEO or a CFO discovering the new lessons and proving their formulas on a world wide scope. The wise elder has yet another stage to approach with grace and beauty. Perhaps from here the wise being will discover the very patterns of being and music becoming part of the very universe. What is a master to you? Comments: |
