 Step 8.  Sublimation

"Man's main task in life is to give birth to himself, to become what he potentially is. The most important product of his effort is his own personality."
-Erich Fromm, Man for Himself

When a baby is born, it is born along with other substances.  The baby is covered with fluids and is attached to a placenta by an umbilical cord that no longer serves a purpose.  These are cleaned and removed from the new child.  It is thought that in the birth from putrefaction, some impurities accompany the stone and must be removed in this manner.

The word sublimation is derived from the Latin Sublimis,  meaning to elevate over a threshold. In sublimation, the substance is heated several times vaporizing it.  The remaining matter is condensed back into a solid state.  In alchemy, this process is completed for purification.  The completed stone must have the qualities of purity and stability and the ability to convert base metals to gold far surpassing its own weight.

In sublimination, a low substance is translated into a higher substance by upward movement.  What is Earth is transformed into Air and a fixed body is volatilized.  The process of vaporization by the gradual application of heat, elevates a airy spirit within the substance. It is thought that in transforming directly from a solid to gaseous state, the rising vapors are made more precious by the virtue of avoiding any loss of potency by earthly contact.  The body is purged by converting the vapor  and discarding the residue.  The spirit is then reconverted into body.  This process is symbolized by doves, or other beautiful birds, flying to the heavens and descending again.
Superficially, many tend to act in a manner that the body is material and that is all.  In sublimination, the energy is more aligned with the being's intentions because of the great realization of what energy is and the embracing of it. In transforming one energy into another, the redirected energy can be used in a more refined manner.    This realization of energy allows it to flow more freely, amplified with the consciousness not interfering with its barriers of what is possible under natural law.  The beginnings of raising subtle power, happiness, harmony and integration of the being with the wholeness of being is begun.

Eighth Key. In a circular walled enclosure, two men with crossbows sit and aim at a square target with a circular bulls-eye, and a key standing above it. Seven arrows have already hit the target. Between these two men is a grave out of which a man or resurrected corpse is emerging. On the left beside this corn is sprouting. In the foreground a corpse lies in a ploughed field on which man on the left is scattering grain, and is greeted by winged angel sounding a trumpet and holding a sceptre. Behind the man four birds are eating the grain.

 Symbolism of the Lotus

The lotus is used in many cultures as a symbol.  In Buddhist thought, the shape is used as representing the birth or attainment of Enlightment.  In India, the flower once represented the unfolding of the physical universe.  Evolving the symbol with the idea that the individual is a microcosm, the lotus came to express the blossoming of inner consciousness and connection.

The natural representation of the lotus is the most beautiful to me.  Perhaps because it is one of the most beautiful flowers to me.  The lotus grows in the mud, but rises above the surface of the water to bloom in the light.  In this way, it is a symbol of a person who transcends worldly attachments and reaches their full potential.
