You might want to add "The Battle Cry of Freedom" to list. Also, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", which basically replaced the words from an older Irish ballad. "Aura Lee" (later done by Elvis as "Love me Tender") was popular among both Union and Confederate soldiers. And I understand that another popular ditty of the day "The Yellow Rose of Texas" actually refers to a prostitute. |
