In my U.S. History class I have been using old songs from the Civil War Era to help my students better understand the war and the way it divided the nation.  So far I have used "Lincoln and Liberty", Battle Hymn of the Republic, Dixie, and An Old unreconstructed.  I am also planning on using " Give us a Flag"  I was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions as to songs that would be useful for giving students a handle on the War or if anyone had any information for futher interperting these songs as often I have the lyrics but very little other information about them.  I'm open to suggestions.....

Don't forget the Bonnie Blue Flag-  The whole shebang all wrapped up in a pretty little bow for you.

You might want to add "The Battle Cry of Freedom" to list. Also, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", which basically replaced the words from an older Irish ballad. "Aura Lee" (later done by Elvis as "Love me Tender") was popular among both Union and Confederate soldiers. And I understand that another popular ditty of the day "The Yellow Rose of Texas" actually refers to a prostitute.
