[1952- ]  Born in Akron, Ohio, she was the recipient of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.  Among her many honors, she served as Poet Laureate of the U.S. and Consultant to the Library of Congress from 1993-1995.  Poetry collections, short stories, a novel, essays, a play and a song cycle are all in her repertoire.  Her new book of poems, released 1999 by W.W. Norton, is entitled, "On the Bus with Rosa Parks."

Near the rue Princesse they had opened
a gallery cum souvenir shop which featured
fuzzy off-color Monets next to his acrylics, no doubt,

plus beared African drums and the occasional miniature
gargoyle from Notre Dame the Great Artist had
carved at breakfast with a pocket knife.
