The Duelists
Lady, have you my measure now
That our slow circling has ceased?
Those first testing probes have finished
And the Dogs of War are unleashed.
You are a brilliance of daring!
A freewheeling fire of attack.
I wonder at your elegance
Even as I’m forced ever back.
Deft parry, feint, swift thrust and cut
Opportunist minx, you seek to maim!
I lose more ground - a little blood.
Beneath you play your deeper game.
‘Neath the fire of relentless assault,
I see the wolf in your shadows,
Waiting to pounce when I’m herded
To your hidden, patient gallows.
Every move drawing me closer,
Enticing me into my doom.
I palm my knife and make ready.
For now I must dance to your tune.
I am entranced in our duel;
This clash of wills and razor wiles.
A joy to match machinations.
But now I smile a Cat’s Paw smile.
Delicious the flash in your eyes
As you feel that first thrill of fear.
To late you see my hidden blade.
Checkmate, I think you’ll find, my dear.
