Some of you may remember this one. It was the first poem I sent to the BBC. I thought I'd dig it out again for a challenge elsewhere. It took a lot of digging out, though. It was buried under a mountain of dust. Cough! Splutter!

LIGHTNING.

I watch the lightning as it streaks
Across the stormy sky.
Those brilliant flashes of electric blue
Light up the clouds in the sky.

Why is Mother Nature so angry?
I speak that thought out loud.
Have we done something to the Earth
That we are not allowed?

I hear the thunder as it rolls,
Cracking it's invisible whip.
Commanding the clouds to burst open
Like a skipper commanding his ship.

I see the rain as it pours
From the clouds in that stormy sky.
My heart fills with gloom as I think
Oh why, oh why, oh why?

Luckily they say lightning never strikes in the same place twice.

Hi Maria,

I like watching thunderstorms too. Ironically, I was watching a thunderstorm when I wrote this poem. It was six in the evening, yet the sky was as black as midnight. I wish I'd had a camera back then. I could have taken some pictures. It was such a magnificent thunderstorm and a pleasure to watch.

Lightning always seems to strike me twice. Oops! There it goes again.
Watch out, Steve. I'm on top form again tonight.

If the rain didn't pour we would die.
I can't think what lightening does to help us,although I think[please correct me if I'm wrong,] it did give Edison the idea for inventing the electric light.

Loved this, Poetess, I do like storms and all that goes with them,
until the lightning gets too close....
then I do not, well captured in words, thanks for reposting, Zy

and Peter...you brought a lump to my throat with what you said in those last few moments about moi...thank you, and I meant what I said in my reply in that (almost last) moment of that board. We have had some grand times, haven't we, lol.
Thanks for the link, I cannot get out of my own thread when I have gone back in, Zy x

Hi Philip,

I don't know what lightning does for us either (apart from providing us with a spectacular display, of course). However, I found this article, which may be of some interest:

I'll post this link in the Podium thread too as I think that it might be a good topic for a debate.

Hi Peter,

I used the link...
...before I remembered that I'd kept mine active too (doh!).
I just have so many memories from the old Beeb board! I can't believe that I was only there for a couple of months. Thanks for that!

Hi Zy,

I love watching storms too. Thunderstorms, snowstorms... I love them.
I just don't like going out in them.

What a great description of a storm!  Since being on the 7th floor and having long windows both in the living room and the kitchen; I tend to hide when the lightning comes for fear it will come thru the windows lol.  I have tried taking pictures thru the glass and it doesn't work.  My windows slide halfway open and are too high to take pics on the outside.

Steve if you think lightning doesn't strike twice, you need to see "War of the Worlds" with Tom Cruise lol.  Sorry that I cannot access that link for never belonged to the Beeb board.  Maybe someone could copy and paste it in here so I could?
