Like Water for Chocolate

By Laura Esquivel.
The number one bestseller in Mexico in 1990, Like Water for Chocolate is a romantic poignant tale, touched with bittersweet moments of magic and sensuality.   Evocative of How to Make an American Quilt in structure, Tampopo in its celebration of food, and Heartburn in its irony and wit, it is a lively and funny tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico.

The narrator's great-aunt Tita is the youngest of three daughters born to Mama Elena, the tyrannical owner of the De La Garza ranch.   While still in her mother's womb, she wept so violently - that she caused Mama Elena to begin early labor; and Tita slipped out in the middle of the kitchen table, amid the spices and fixings for noodle soupl.    This early encounter with food soon became a way of life, and Tita grew up to be a master chef.   Each chapter of the novel begins with one of Tita's recipes and her careful instructions for preparation.

In well-born Mexican families, tradition dictates that the youngest daughter not marry, but remain at home to care for her mother.   Even though Tita has fallen in love, Mama Elena chooses not to make an exception, and instead, arranges for Tita's older sister to marry Tita's young man.

In order to punish Tita for her willfulness, Mama Elena forces her to bake the wedding cake.  The bitter tears Tita weeps while stirring the batter provoke a remarkable reaction among the guests who eat the cake.  It is then that it first becomes apparent that her culinary talents are unique.

Laura Esquivel's voice is direct, simple, and compelling.   She has written a fresh and innovative novel, bringing her own inimitatable strengths to a classic love story.

OUTLANDER SERIES

By Diana Gabaldon.
I was given the first of this series by a friend and after being prodded...... I found that I was amazed at how wonderfully written and researched they were! Historical novels are not really my favorite choice, but these have become some of my most treasured books.  The gist of the story is a strange one to describe, it involves time-travel, and takes place in Scotland back during the 17th century.  I don't normally read science fiction either...so bear with me here.

It begins with an English nurse, just returning from serving during WW-II. She and her husband are visiting Scotland on a genealogical trip.  She somehow falls "through" a portal in a henge (think Stonehenge)....and finds herself back in the 1700s.  Of course, she meets and falls in love with a gorgeous Scottish warrior, so there's definitely romance. At different portions of the books, you are brought "back to the future" to modern times, but the most interesting stuff is the love and life they lead back during the 1700s.  There are times spent in the Paris of 1740...the battles with the British, espionage, and of course some great love scenes.

What was so wonderful about these, was that they were so meticulously researched, and I learned more than I ever thought I wanted to know about Scottish history. My mother who is a history buff, has read them all now and swears that they are amazingly authentic.

There are now five books in the series (the last one THE FIERY CROSS) came out at Christmas last year, and they're biggies (most over 700 pages), but if you're a reader, they're definitely worth your time.

All but one are in soft-back now, and are entitled:

OUTLANDER
DRAGONFLY IN AMBER
VOYAGER
DRUMS OF AUTUMN
THE FIERY CROSS

Great beach books!

The Millinaires

By Brad Meltzer.
"The Millionaires" is a wonderful book..as are all of this wonderful new authors works. He has a warm style of writing. He makes you feel for the characters and that is the key to a good book. His two previous books include " The First Counsel" and "Dead Even". I think you will be impressed.

THE ROOKIE

By Disney Movie.
Uplifting, sentimental and true: Dennis Quaid plays a high school baseball teacher who makes it to the major leagues. Although it's a baseball movie, the lessons can be applied to many situations in life.  If you want a feel good movie with a just a few tears - this is it.   I think this is the first time a movie that was rated "A" by the papers was also rated "A" by me after viewing it.
