OUTLANDER SERIES
By
Diana Gabaldon
.
I was given the first of this series by a friend and after being prodded...... I found that I was amazed at how wonderfully written and researched they were! Historical novels are not really my favorite choice, but these have become some of my most treasured books. The gist of the story is a strange one to describe, it involves time-travel, and takes place in Scotland back during the 17th century. I don't normally read science fiction either...so bear with me here.
It begins with an English nurse, just returning from serving during WW-II. She and her husband are visiting Scotland on a genealogical trip. She somehow falls "through" a portal in a henge (think Stonehenge)....and finds herself back in the 1700s. Of course, she meets and falls in love with a gorgeous Scottish warrior, so there's definitely romance. At different portions of the books, you are brought "back to the future" to modern times, but the most interesting stuff is the love and life they lead back during the 1700s. There are times spent in the Paris of 1740...the battles with the British, espionage, and of course some great love scenes.
What was so wonderful about these, was that they were so meticulously researched, and I learned more than I ever thought I wanted to know about Scottish history. My mother who is a history buff, has read them all now and swears that they are amazingly authentic.
There are now five books in the series (the last one THE FIERY CROSS) came out at Christmas last year, and they're biggies (most over 700 pages), but if you're a reader, they're definitely worth your time.
All but one are in soft-back now, and are entitled:
OUTLANDER
DRAGONFLY IN AMBER
VOYAGER
DRUMS OF AUTUMN
THE FIERY CROSS
Great beach books!

"The Millionaires" is a wonderful book..as are all of this wonderful new authors works. He has a warm style of writing. He makes you feel for the characters and that is the key to a good book. His two previous books include " The First Counsel" and "Dead Even". I think you will be impressed.

Uplifting, sentimental and true: Dennis Quaid plays a high school baseball teacher who makes it to the major leagues. Although it's a baseball movie, the lessons can be applied to many situations in life. If you want a feel good movie with a just a few tears - this is it. I think this is the first time a movie that was rated "A" by the papers was also rated "A" by me after viewing it.
