Like Water for Chocolate
Laura Esquivel
The number one bestseller in Mexico in 1990, Like Water for Chocolate is a romantic poignant tale, touched with bittersweet moments of magic and sensuality. Evocative of How to Make an American Quilt in structure, Tampopo in its celebration of food, and Heartburn in its irony and wit, it is a lively and funny tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico. The narrator's great-aunt Tita is the youngest of three daughters born to Mama Elena, the tyrannical owner of the De La Garza ranch. While still in her mother's womb, she wept so violently - that she caused Mama Elena to begin early labor; and Tita slipped out in the middle of the kitchen table, amid the spices and fixings for noodle soupl. This early encounter with food soon became a way of life, and Tita grew up to be a master chef. Each chapter of the novel begins with one of Tita's recipes and her careful instructions for preparation. In well-born Mexican families, tradition dictates that the youngest daughter not marry, but remain at home to care for her mother. Even though Tita has fallen in love, Mama Elena chooses not to make an exception, and instead, arranges for Tita's older sister to marry Tita's young man. In order to punish Tita for her willfulness, Mama Elena forces her to bake the wedding cake. The bitter tears Tita weeps while stirring the batter provoke a remarkable reaction among the guests who eat the cake. It is then that it first becomes apparent that her culinary talents are unique. Laura Esquivel's voice is direct, simple, and compelling. She has written a fresh and innovative novel, bringing her own inimitatable strengths to a classic love story.

John Irving
This is one of my favourite Irving books.......some of you may have read it or seen the film (which earned Michael Caine an Oscar). Beautifully written, the story is a wartime account of life in an orphanage in Maine....a place where orphans are lovingly cared for and protected by the doctor in charge and his loyal staff, as well as each other. As always, Irving carries an underlying subject theme, making it a most enjoyable read. That's all I'll say about it, but I promise you'll enjoy it. As for the movie of the same title...beautifully photographed....the closest interpretation of a book I've come across....VERY much worth seeing.

Well, it said Books AND MOVIES!! As most of you know by now (after the Golden Globe Awards), this is an excellent movie. There's no way to describe it to make you want to go see it. Who wants to go see a pic about Mental illness, why you'd have to be crazy (whoops?) Anyway, just go see it and enjoy it. Agent

"One for the Money"

Janet Evonovich
This book is a wonderful beginning for Janet Evonovich. She introduces hermain character Stephanie Plum. I have NEVER read a more hilarious series of books than these. "One for the Money" is her first in this series with Stephanie and her crazy family. She follows it up with "Two for the Dough", "Three to get Deadly", "Four to Score", "High Five", "Hot Six" and her latest, "Seven Up". Stephanie is a bounty hunter in New Jersey..if you can believe it and she never runs out of hilarious escapades running around the streets of New Jersey hunting criminals. If you want to laugh yourself silly...this is the thing for you! ~Tori~ aka. Alias

"The Ritual Bath"

Faye Kellerman
"The Ritual Bath" is a very interesting look into the Jewish faith. It's the first in a series of books bye Mrs. Kellerman dealing with the family of Homocide Detective Peter Decker and the meeting of his Orthodox Jewish future wife. This story using mystery, suspense, humor and romance to provide an excellent story as well as leave you wanting to read the next book because you love the characters so much. Make sure if you read this series that you try to read them in the order they were written because with each succesive book you see this families relationships develop and their children grow. I love the Deckers...I think you will too. ~Tori~ aka. Alias

THE ROOKIE
Disney Movie
Uplifting, sentimental and true: Dennis Quaid plays a high school baseball teacher who makes it to the major leagues. Although it's a baseball movie, the lessons can be applied to many situations in life. If you want a feel good movie with a just a few tears - this is it. I think this is the first time a movie that was rated "A" by the papers was also rated "A" by me after viewing it.
