Three years ago George Russell Weller, then 86 years old, plowed his Buick LeSabre into a crowded farmers' market in Santa Monica, Calif., killing 10 people and injuring 63.  Weller was convicted of vehicular manslaughter in Los Angeles Superior Court.

So, are older drivers too much of a risk or not?  There's no easy answer.  Even statistics deliver a mixed message:  Older drivers generally have fewer accidents per driver than the national average -- but they have more accidents per mile of driving.

When is it time to quit driving?  Should government play a role in the decision?  How can families help?

This may not be a popular stance, but I believe that everyone should be tested in a driving test every five years or so.  We may think that older people need to be checked, but what about individuals that have had a stroke, heart attack or other disabilities that keep him/her from properly being able to drive. My father, three years ago, was walking around, kicking our butts, and driving everywhere he needed to go and he was 73. But since then, he had knee replacement surgery which the doctor botched. He can not walk now without aid of a walker or chair. His senses have now diminished because of the inactivity, all this within three years.  A simple driving test would refresh our memories of the rules of the road and help us become better drivers.

I think everyone needs to be tested on a regular basis ...Aging isn't the only thing that plagues us...The longer we drive, the more complacent we become...we cut corners and adopt the attitude that we are better drivers than everyone else....When the truth is..most are not..

My mom is 87 and still drives...Well enough that I am comfortable being a passenger in her vehicle..I feel a lot of my peers are worse drivers than she is...

I think 65 is a good age at which to begin testing "seniors"..I will add to that anyone taking certain types of medications or ailments.I have been in line at the DMV and seen the examiner give and elderly person several tries on the eye test..maybe after age 65 reflex and cognitive tests should also be given.

I believe older people should be tested and they do get tested here in Aus... I dont know at what age it begins or how often it is carried out, but the lady across the road from us is 81 and she is up for her 2nd exam.
