This picture is causing a controversy in Providence, Rhode Island. This is high school senior Patrick Agin. He is a member of a society that researches and recreates medieval history. He wanted this photo to be his senior portrait. Before you ask, the high school allows students to be in costumes in their senior portrait as long as it does not violate the dress code. The costume does not, but the sword does. The school board has a strict "No Tolerance" policy when it comes to weapons. But the ACLU says the policy is no so strict when it comes to theatrical performances. Plus, the school's mascot is a "Patriot". The character of the patriot carries a rifle. The ACLU states that the mascot carries a weapon but the students can not. The school board has told the mother of Patrick Agin that she can put the photo in the advertising section of the yearbook, but she would have to pay to put it in.
Is this fair? Who is right? Who is wrong? What do you think?
