Be it in chat -- people you meet along the way -- or your friends

If your friends/acquaintances are in a predicament and they ask you for a loan of money - do you help them out?

Would you offer?

Have you ever been in this situation?

Any good/bad stories/advice to share?

Reason I ask this question is for 2 reasons - I am sure we have all heard a story or 2 from the net of people helping pple with money only to find the person has fallen off this planet -- even tho they thought they knew them well

I havent got any stories to tell (concerning myself) - but I do have a friend of mine that it has happened to and I do know the other person (the runner) - not sure what to make of it to be honest

was just curious if anyone else had anything to say on this topic

Oh boy...do I have stories..lol..

There was a time I would lend money to anyone that asked...I guess I believed that everyone felt the same way I did about borrowing things...You pay it back, or return it, when you say you will....No ifs, ands, or buts...Unfortunately I found out the hard way (many times) that not everyone feels that way.

I know it may sound heartless..but friends and money don't mix...Neither does lending cars, or expensive tools...People rarely care for your things the way you do...

Things are great until something gets broken and they don't want, or can't afford to replace it.... I had one so-called friend break a chainsaw and when he returned it, broken...could only say, "well....you can afford another one"...Whether I can afford it or not has nothing to do with it...

Another friend borrowed money from me and didn't even tell his wife (my best friend)..because he was using it to gamble with...I eventually did get the money back...but at the expense of their marriage..and our friendship...

Yet another borrowed my car and got into an accident...Then couldn't afford to pay the deductible..Granted..an accident isn't planned...but when you borrow...it's YOUR responsibility if something goes wrong..

I have lent money to someone I met on line, but it wasn't until after I met them in person....and we have known each other for many years now...A significant amount...They have yet to pay me back, but I know the circumstances...We continue to stay in touch and they have not tried to avoid me or give excuses...That I can handle..

I would never see anyone go hungry...If they need food, I'll buy it....If they need a drive somewhere...I'll take them..I've been burnt too many times...and seen too many wonderful friendships blown apart because of money...

The old saying "Never a lender, nor borrower be" is something I try to live by now...

LOL Blackhose -- my brain was working faster than my fingers after I read your post
I agree 110% with all you said -- specially with lending things -- didnt think of that side of it lol

I will help in anyway I can with food on the table etc - but I tend to stay clear of money talk unless its family or someone I have known and seen for years - those sorta things I see as personal stuff

Being a person that wouldnt ask for anything -- and if they have offered or insisted(like a CD for me to burn or something) -- its back the next day -- but yes I have heard and seen so many that just trash other peoples stuff

It all depends on who is asking. If my brother is asking, I would probably loan the money. If a good friend did, I would. But if someone who consistantly is not dependable wants money, NO WAY. Thats all I have to say about that.
