In a recent interview on C-Span with John McWhorter (author/liguist)as guest, the subject turned to illegal drugsand how best to address this problem.Mr. McWhorter was of the opinion that drugs should be legalized, taxed and controlled by the government, thereby gaining tax revenue and also controlling (to some extent)it's distribution. The theory(with some very good points)is by making it legal(as with alcohol during prohibition)you make it unprofitable on the street, you generate revenue(taxes)and controll(as I said to some extent)who can attain. What's yer thought?????? |

Outlaw drugs! Strive harder to put the illegal drug pushers in prison! Those drugs are illegal for a reason... they make you do crazy things. |

I strongly disgree with his philosophy. Drugs are legal in many places in Europe, such as Amsterdam. But yet many of these places have the highest suicide rates in the world. Do you think there is a connection???? The same philosophy was used during prohibition. If we legalize it and control it, illegal alcohol making will cease. Well, coming from the south, I can tell you that his belief is WRONG> There are moonshiners and illegal beer breweries right down the road from me. It has not slowed them down and won't. So legalizing drugs will just make it easier for people to get hooked on them and cause the fall of our society. |

Study after study has shown we are not winning the war on drugs. People want them and will use them period. Make them legal, tax the hell out of them, like they do now for cigarettes. The product can be controlled so that you would have less over doses. As for higher suicide rates that means very little to me. If you take your own life that is your problem. I have very little empathy for someone that takes their own life. |

Yeah, but Mike? I don't think you'd be too happy if a crazed druggie, high on crystal meth or cocaine, who didn't even know where he was or what he was doing ran through a stop light and murdered your innocent daughters, would you? He wouldn't even go to jail because he hadn't broken any laws. |

Joe, That could happen now with drugs not being legal. And to correct you yes even now he would be charged with involuntary manslaughter. Legalizing drugs does not make the chances of being hit by a drugged up individual any more likely in my honest opinion. Plus the states, Feds, etc., can make more money and lower my taxes. |
