I just received this email from a fellow Group Manager regarding the
closure of all the "MSN Groups" and moving them to a new server
 "Multiply" in 2009.
Has anyone other Group Manager heard this news also yet???
(Please see below for the full email that i received from her)
((Hugs~JG))

I just thought as a manager of a MSN group I would give you the heads up about MSN groups closing in case
you haven't heard yet. This is a real shock! I just wanted to let managers know to give them time to digest this
and then make decisions regarding their group.
Hugs,
Panda

I got a reply from MSN there is no doubt now that they are definately closing groups

Hello Kimberly,

Thank you for writing to MSN Groups Technical Support. This is regarding your inquiry if MSN will be moving
MSN Groups.I realize the importance of this matter to you.

Kimberly, it is true that we are planning to close the MSN Groups service on February 21, 2009 and will offer
you the opportunity to move your Group to our new partner service, Multiply.  We want you to be able to keep
your Group together, so we partnered with Multiply to create a migration process that moves your Group to their
service to preserve your online community and its history.

The migration method that Multiply has built for you will be ready next week.  Once the service is ready we'll send
all of our users an email and will post notices within the MSN Groups site with more information, including instructions
for beginning the migration process. In the meantime you can visit http://Multiply.com to get to know the service and
see some of the thousands of groups they host already.

Many users are asking why we are closing MSN Groups.  We want to provide our customers with the most current
and user friendly technology available today and we made the difficult decision to close the MSN Groups service as
part of our overall investment in updating and re-aligning our online services with Windows Live. In the long term we
believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative, best of breed services that help you stay
in touch with the people you care about.
It's very important to us that you still have access to your Group and its data and that is why we have partnered with
Multiply,so you can keep your Group going into the future despite the closure of MSN Groups.

Between today and February 21, 2009 nothing will change about the MSN Groups service except that we will
remove the option to add more storage to your group. Other features will remain until the service is shut down and
you can use it the same way you do today until the date of closure. Watch the site and your email inbox over the next
week as we will post updated information there, including a more detailed outline of your options and next steps.

We appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide you with the highest quality service available.
Thank you for using MSN Groups.

Sincerely,

Dot

Jewels I got this article from the washtingto post.

We've received confirmation that Microsoft is handing over the reins to its MSN Groups property to the social network Multiply. Microsoft is planning to release a new service called Windows Live Groups in November, and apparently doesn't want to compete with itself. Oddly enough, Microsoft has chosen not to allow groups to transition between the two services, and instead is going to offer a migration tool that will allow users to take groups over to Multiply, which currently bills itself as the world's 8th largest social network.

The rumor was originally reported earlier today after a series of emails were posted to a MSN Discussion newsgroup, and has since been confirmed by both Multiply and Microsoft through a blog post.

Here's Microsoft's explanation for the shutdown:

The natural question to ask in this situation is why we are closing MSN Groups. It is our goal to provide our customers with the most current and user friendly technology available today. We made the difficult decision to close the MSN Groups service as part of an overall investment in updating and re-aligning our online services with Windows Live. In the long term we believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative, best of breed services that help you stay in touch with the people you care about. It?s very important to us that you keep the data you created using MSN Groups and that is why we have partnered with Multiply, so you can keep your group going into the future despite the closure of MSN Groups.

The Microsoft post also states that users will have until February 21, 2009 to migrate their groups over to Multiply, after which point the site will cease to exist.

This just seems weird - why would Microsoft abandon a sizable (but dwindling) chunk of users to an entirely unrelated social network? It's nice that they aren't leaving their users out in the cold, but why not just cut off new signups to MSN Groups and allow the legacy users to continue on in peace? Microsoft may appear to have made the gesture in good faith, but it's likely that the company is hoping users will scoff at the idea of having to migrate, and just sign up on the new Live service when it launches.

Whatever Microsoft's intentions, Multiply is sure to be happy with the deal, as it has just been handed millions of new users (we're trying to contact Microsoft for the exact number).

Hello to everyone and I know you are all as heart broken as I am over this.I just wanted to add that in another managers group someone posted that a new web site is suppose to launch on Nov 17th and she said it is to be set up just like MSN groups. That's all she could say for now so I just wanted to let you know and to keep your eyes peeled for this new site as I will be.Mean while I am re-building over at Yuku but it is so different from what we are used to as is Multiply. Many managers are posting that they are closing their groups down and not moving on.Others say they are having a hard time having any interest in their group now because doing any further work on them is meaningless knowing that it is all going to be deleted in Feb.Again, such a sad situation.I am truely going to miss all the beautiful backgrounds and websets that talented people made and shared with all.But let's all hope that it's true about this new site coming Nov.17th      Hugs,Panda

It's all over ALL the boards!  My management team and I are exploring some options.  Beagle Bay is 7 years old - and we have information we just don't want to lose so we're hoping that one of the "options" will allow us to transfer the group intact.  Most of my pictures and graphics are in Photbucket - but there are some older things that weren't on this computer that I'll have to transfer out of albums on my group and back to the computer and then to Photobucket!
Ya Gotta Luv MSN!  They really know how to win friends - or is that enemies??

Glad to hear you will be moving your information Glenda !
I too will be moving my recipe sites. I ahve been waiting for the day MSN  would close the groups it is here now and I am determined to move my stuf once and for all - with hopefully no fear of it happening again.
There had been rumors of groups closing for the last 2 years.
I am in the process of looking for a new "space" to move stuff too as well.

Hang strong Glenda we will get thru this !!

Good Evening Everyone,
Boy what a mess this is for a all.For myself i have also tried to join up with http://www.multiply.com/
but could not process my application as this is the message i kept on getting....
" The E-mail Address and Password combination you entered is incorrect."
(I sure hope this isn't an indication of their future service to us)
For the moment i think i will just sit and wait and watch,if i can move the whole group over to them
as is that would be great and also we could also be able to access our friends who are also with them
through something like how "My Groups" are with MSN now.But what if heaps of them go elsewhere
what a nightmare that is going to be to find them all again..  I don't think i have it in me to start this
group all over again too many long long hours have gone into its creation, and i am not even sure yet
if they will be able to transfer the "Backgrounds"over at all yet????
My My!!!! I get a headache every time i think about it,so for the time being i am just going to sit on
the fence and check out what all my other groups are thinking of doing.
Here are a couple of links for you all to go and check out things with "Multiply" seems they have
started a special page for the "Migration from MSN" so i would suggest that you don't jump in to
anything just yet we still have some time to wait and see what MSN comes up with.
"Community Feedback" is also another great group that has heaps of information for you so if your
not a member there it's a good place to join to keep a watch on the events as they enfold there is
no strict posting requirments ther either.. But most of all my friends try not to PANIC...
((Hugs~JG))

Here are those links you may want to check out from Multiply:

This closure announsement has really knocked the socks off me i must
admit i think i am still in shock over the whole thing,it almost makes me
want to throw in the towel and give it all away it's been such a lot of hard
work and to see it all lost would just break my heart.
It's only because of all the great friends i have in here that is stopping me
from doing just that very thing..
