Gary Browning, this sites founder and owner, has a book published called appropriately enough "Scroll Saw Portraits". It is available at lot of places like bookstores, scrollsaw pattern sites, Amazon.com and may even be found at your local library, as well as from Gary's personal site .
This should get you started and for information on using different computer programs for making patterns check out the "Pattern Making Tips" on the left.
That being said, there are those that hand draw their patterns also.

Thanks going to have to check that out , I have been looking at photos that people have been helping others turn into patterns and i think the bulb is starting to flicker.  One of the main thing looks like leaving enough wood to hold things together ??
