Hi all,

Just want to get some opinions.  I have several sources for inexpensive 1/2 to 3/4 wood and would like to know which is the best method to cut it down to 1/4.  I know a planer would definately work, but would waste a lot of wood.  Resawing with a band saw is an option but is the planer a better option?  Just trying to figure out what way to go.

Thanks,
Jeff

You are probably not going to like this answer but to answeryour question fairely I say you need both. If you buy just a planer like you said that is an awful waste of wood to go from 3/4" to 1/4" and if you buy just a bandsaw and do resawing you will get a rough surface that needs to be planed or sanded smoothe and to do this with a hand sander is a waste of time. Now you can buy a drum sander that will do better than a planer. So you have to ask yourself with the expense of two new tools is it worth it or should I just order wood on-line to the size I need?? To me I prefer the tools.

Jeff,
John is correct, you need two tools, a bandsaw and a drum sander or planer.  After you resaw, the surface of the wood is rough and you still need to bring the wood to the proper thickness.

Hi  just wanna throw in my 2 cents as if I have any cents anyway  the resaw and plane is the way I go too but in getting your bandsaw ya gotta make sure it will cut the width you want. I have a 9" bandsaw that won't cut but about 3 or 31/2 inch  so when it gets  more than that I use my table saw which by cutting boths sides I can go about 6 or so inches then if its wider than that I can run my handsaw through it . Dang far this is getting to be hard work.  Heck with it  just go scroll something.  gw

Thanks Gentlemen,

You have collectively helped me make my decision.  I don't really have room in my shop for both tools and as John said, I can buy a lot of wood on the internet for what both tools would cost.

As Scrollpop said, heck with it I am just going to go scroll something.

Thanks,
Jeff
