Went to Llandeilo on my birthday last month. Wandering around the bookshop there, came across one by Laura Wernham. A fairly old book which bore no publication date but, guessing, I would say around 1920. Lovely, inspirational poetry, very much like Patience Strong's work. Here is one which brought tears to my eyes. I don't normally enjoy poetry which relates to the time of someone's death but this is so eloquent. Let me know what you think.....
So far
Down's to death's door we went with you No further could we go We waited hovering just outside And wandering to and fro So far (and yet we loved you so) And then the door was shut We would have gone with you inside Clasping your hand and helping, but Not yet for us to pass that doorway through Not yet for us the glory that you knew
Will you come back to us sometimes When we are quite alone And in your thoughtful kindly way And gentle loving tone Say still you love us all the same And we too one bright day Shall pass beyond that portal dark And happy soar with you away But your dear love we have it as before Kept back that cannot be, by death's dark door

Glad you liked the poem Chrissie and thank you for taking the trouble to reply. I found the second verse very emotive. Words can hold so much power can't they. Will post some more of Laura's poems - hope you like those too! |
