I was wondoring what kind of grain I should use in my new 270 for deer hunting. My dad tells me I should use 150 grain but I think I should use 130 cuz it will expand a lot quicker. Right now im using Winchester Super-X, cxp3 150 grain powerpoint. Now this load says its ideal for game such as elk, moose, and brown bear. I shot my buck this year and I didnt knock it over, it ran about 30 yards. I think if I can get someone to tell my dad that 130 grain powerpoint is more sufficiant for deer hunting. |

the 270 is light for elk,bear and moose. at
least come up to a 30-06 for elk,bear and moose,because they have bigger boddies
and need a bullet with more energy to help get it to the vital
organs.

Hey Mudvayne,
My wife hunts mulies and elk with a .270. She shoots Speer Nitrex 150
gr. Grand Slams and knocks the snot out of them. A good shot will put them
down every time.

Everything I have ever seen or read suggests the 130 pointed soft point is (perhaps) the most deadly deer medicine on the planet. Load it to 3,000 and hit 'em in the shoulder and the deer will drop like punched by a sledge hammer. I am not aware of a factory load for the 270 above 150 grains but for animals larger than mule deer.....find a .270 load with a bullet heavier than 160 grains. |

| The 130 Grain bullet is more than sufficient for the 270. This round is so fast and penetrates so deep you really don't need any more bullet weight. Add that to the fact that there are some excellent factory cartriges with superior bullets and this is the number 1 cartridge for deer. The 130 grain bullet will give you slightly less recoil than the 150 grain bullet which will help ensure that the bullet is well placed...and that more than anything else is what kills. By the way, if a deer runs 30 yards after being hit and drops, that really isn't a problem. It can drop quicker if you hit with a neck or spine shot, but those shots are risly and you're more likely to wound the animal and ruin meat. |
