I have purchased a Rem. 700 BDL 7mm Mag for my son's Christmas present. This is a new caliber to me as I have been hunting with my 30-06 forever. I hunt white tail in Wisconsin and do not re-load. What is the best round to purchase for this rifle under these conditions?

From what i read you are like a lot of us, I  get the impression your son is under 5 and you need to do a little breakin on the gun? The 7mm Rem. Mag is a lot of gun, 7mm-08 is a son's-gun if he is a youth.
What kind of stores are in your area? If all you have is discount stores near-by you will not have the best selection. When one counts on store-bought cartridges, the worst thing is sighting in with a hard to come by load. as when you get in a bind, you have to substitute. Walmarts and K-marts and the like didn't do the serious shooters any favors, as the chased out the good-old-boy gun shops that could realy help us shooters.
We are so lucky to have a GOOD gun shop in nearby Grand Rapids MN where the BS is there most popular product. There is always a few shooters shooting more than guns in the 5+ chairs in an arc arround the command center, where special orders are place in the event the item you need is not on the shelf.
Oh-Sure i could go back home and e-buy or phone it in to cabelas, But then what happens to our little jewel of a gun shop???.....

I am in the Milwaukee ares, so getting to a good sporting goods store is not a problem. I should be able to get my hands on about any factory load available. You are the first one I have heard mention that a 7mm mag. is a youth gun though. It isn't a 7mm-08. So, any suggestions on a cartridge?

I commented that a 7mm Rem Mag is a lot of gun......  Then i stated that a 7mm08 is a youth gun.
 
For Deer size game/Lots of safe shooting area/ long rangeas in powerline shooting a good load for the very impressive Magnum 7mm would be Federals P7RH load. That is a 150 gr. Nozler Balistic tip bullet Loaded into a Federal Premium load.
For Larger Game like Elk & Moose the P7RK load is a dandy. But these are factory loads and may not work well in your rifle.
Check out Federal.com and other ammo manufacture web sites. Then a good breakin of the rifle, maybe a little free-float work, and some good old relaxing shooting at the range. You will need to shoot that rifle at 400-500yards to see what/how the load will preform ballisticly. A minute of angle at 100 yard is great, but will you get it at long range?
I have used nozler ballistic tip bullet for years and i like the preformance on deer. The plastic tip is to keep tip from deforming in loading/handling.

Sorry I mis-read ya Gbrohman.Thanks for the info.
You are the second person to suggest the Federals.I'll for sure give 'em a try. I've been using 180gr. Silvertips for the 30-06 with great success for so long that I'm not savvy to what else is out there. I have done a little checking and handling of the Fed's with the plastic tips and they have my curiosity up. Might buy a box for myself to try. My boy is 14 and big as me so I wasn't too concerned about too much gun. Truth is he's a lefty and this Rem. was a used model in pristine condition and for a south paw. I paid 500 for it with a case. No scope. Seemed like a fair price to pay.
I can shoot at 100 yds close to town but will have to wait till spring for long range try outs,

Remington sells a load they call "managed recoil loads" and what that dose is gives the shooter who isn't into reloading the oppertunity to shoot store boughts that are easyer on the upper torso. It will in the case of the 7mm Rem Mag bring it down to about the ballistics of a .308 Win. and that will allow for just about anyone to enjoy shooting that gun.
Also i would look into Magna-porting the thing as it really makes it stay in place on the bench.
Check out the web site www.remington.com  look under whats new, and you can compare different loads right on that site.
