I know this is an old discussion, but one
that I`ve had the pleasure of understanding
just how ahead of it`s time the 284 Win was!
My first encounter was in 1967, when an old
Rancher friend introduced me to a 6mm/284!
A wildcat in all respects which was a lot of
fun! Now like the 264 Mag, it got a lot of bad
press from the writters as to be over bore and
did not really give a great deal of advantage! I
can only say, if we had the powder then that
we have now, that would be a non story! But
in our mauser action and 26" Douglas Barrel
we were making very good groups in all bullet
weights! It was a very popular chambering, as
well as the 25/284! The problem was it was a
pain makeing case`s and fire forming them! It
can be a tough case to neck down! The best
was the 338/284, a hard hitter for any short
action rifle! It has a wider case than the 06, so
it had enough shoulder to neck it up to 35 and
375 with no problem! Today the real serious
1000 yard shooters nearly to a man are shooting
the 6.5/284, it is a work horse and one of the
best wild cats on the 284 case! So accurate is
this round with long 142 grain match bullets for
long range shooting is amazing! sub 4" groups!
has prompted Norma to offer factory brass! It
has finally after all these years proving what we
knew a long time ago, the 284 is a wonderful
case design! Not enough folks know or have
tried it! The standard 284 is a fine round for a
feller that just wants some thing different! It`ll
give the same performance as the 280 Rem, an
in a short case thats not to shabby!
