Growing up in Texas as a youngster, I decided
I had to have a model 70 in 220 swift, I saved
my money and finally when I had the money, I
headed off to order My swift! I was 14 at the
time, so my grand dad went with me! I nearly
cried when the man at the gun store told me that
Winchester had dropped the swift, and it had
been replaced with a 225, a new round! So I
ordered that! When it came in I was shocked
that the new rifle was as uggly as my cousins
girl friend! It was a few years later when I had
found a used swift, now I loved the 225, but the
swift was an eye opening adventure, the factory
loads were not that impressive, but when I got
my loading dies, a new world was opening in
the life of many varmits and it was very short!
Brass life was short, if you tried to get the new
world speed record! Back then most of the 45
grain bullets would vaporize in flight! due to
fact they were designed for lower speeds! I
found the 53 grain match H.P. my best with a
load of 4064 was a deadly load! I did shoot
the barrel out, but it was fun, later I tried the new
lighter bullets which were fine for small varmits
but bigger ones tended to blow up, so I always
thought the light bullets were designed for smaller
rounds to perform like a swift, so once I started
to shoot the proper bullets that are designed for
a swift, the blow ups disappeared! If a shooter
spends time with a swift, it will show why after
all these years it still is hard to beat! Last time I
headed to Montana to reduce the little dog herds
I took a 221 fireball, a 220 swift and a 6mm ackly
improved, which covered the bases!
