How many here have one of these (through the CMP), and are you happy with them? I am about to finally buy a Garand and want some re-assurance/advice. G

You can't go wrong with the CMP. I have eight CMP M1s and they are all beauts.

All of my Garands came from the CMP, I wouldn't buy one any other way.  It's pot luck but you will get a safe shooter at the very least.  I got lucky with my Winchester, its gorgeous.
All their Garands are .30-06.  The Danish ones with the VAR barrels are good, as are the Greek ones.  A friend of mine has a kinda ratty looking Greek that shoots amazing, he wins all the rack rifle matches with it.
I would also recommend picking up a Springfield +/or a Carbine if you can.  And ammo, lots and lots of ammo.  The CMP has the best deal going on .30-06.  Save the brass, get some .308 black tip heads, and roll your own!
The only Garand I would not recommend is either a Blue Sky import or one from Century Arms.  They are notorious for being of very poor quality.  I bought a Blue Sky just so I could tear it apart and turn it into a .308 Tanker.

Yeah...my first Garand was a "Blue Sky" and it was so worn out, I doubt I could hit my foot with it.

The "Tanker" was never actually issued to anyone.  They made a test of it and found the blast too intense to field the weapon.  I believe there are only about two of the prototypes in existance.....but you can find plenty of of them as "rebuilds" on the market......pieces of crap, from what I hear.

Well I've talked myself into it. Order goes in the mail today. I should've done this when I still lived in TX and avoided the 8% sales tax. Oh well. Thanks.

Tankers Rock!  Like anything else, not a piece of crap if built right.  Springfield Armory made a factory run and they were spot on.  Turns the Garand into a very snappy rifle.  I love mine, built it in .308 just to be different.
Lazarus, try out a GOOD Tanker, then come on these boards and tell us if they're crap or not.
