If you have an old surplus Mauser and want to put a scope on it and sporterize it with the original barrel being used, you will need to take the military sights off. Be aware that they are held on two ways. First they have a screw that is threaded into the barrel. (the front sight screw is under the dove tailed front sight) the Rear sight screw may be in the open or may be under the sight leaf itself. And they have a very fine slot. So you may have to get an old screw driver and thin it down. Use a file to do it rather than a grinder as the grinder will heat it up and burn the metal. You may have to heat treat it afterwards and quence it in old motor oil to keep it from twisting off. Depending on how cheap the screw driver is. Now the second method of holding the sights on. Solder. Yeah they soldered them to the barrel. So fire up the propane torch and work it around the barrel until you see the solder beading out the edges. A brass or lead hammer will drive the sights off without denting the barrel or the sights. Lots of luck getting the solder off the barrel. Because you will want to touch up the blue anyway go ahead and use some emery cloth in a shoe shine method and many hours later you will have the barrel clean of solder. Then go in the house and pour yourself a cup or glass of your favorite drink cause you will have earned it. I didn't say this would be easy did I? LOL Sarge |
