I was at the coast over the weekend for a writers confab and we gathered at a range to test drive some new products from CVA.
One is the electronic ignition .50 cal smokepole. I'm not kidding. Electronic firing blackpowder rifle. No caps or primers required. Two AA batteries and yer in business. It takes about 5 seconds to recharge the firing, but we are talking about muzzleloaders. Dave Merideth, CVA PR man, described it as the next generation of muzzleloaders.
Dave assured me the cleanup is a snap, even faster than the new break-action smokepoles.
Anyone remember the ill-fated Remington electronic ignition centerfire of some years back?
Regardless, the trigger was the absolute smoothest I've ever pulled. I can see where the idea of a completely sealed smokepole will appeal to hunters who are in damp areas. My three shots probably would have killed a large deer, definitely an elk, but the 3rd would have missed a smaller critter.
I just was nervous as all git out with that electronic firing mechanism.
I also shot the new Elite centerfire by CVA. Thompson reliability, accuracy and barrel-change-out ability at considerably less the price. I shot the .223. At 110 yards, I was EXTREMELY pleased. Gonna get one of these.
Dave promises me CVA will intro a few new barrel calibers a year until they hit all the major calibers.
The range was opened for us by an NRA instructor who also shoots a .50 Barrett and a .338 Lapua. He said he has a Leupold Mark 4 on his Barrett and, prior to that, it went thorough thousands of rounds on a .300 H&H. Made me wonder if he got a top scope or was yanking my chain.
He also reports he gets 3 reloads out of the .338 L brass before he gets a split or dented case.
