I am getting a 8-9 year old U2 from a friends parents in the new year. His name is Mojo and he's a plucker. He's been plucking for around 6-7 years since they got him and over the past year has started to chew his wing.  What can I do to try to break him of this? Before I bring him home he's going to my avian vet for tests and such as I dont want to pass anything on to my IRN Luna........Any advice is appreciated :)

Phew!  That is such a difficult problem and 'Too's are notorious pluckers.  In the sidebard menu on the left there are great links and lot's of information on plucking.  Read through those posts for information, too.  Lot's of BB'ers have had to deal with that problem and one thing we've found is that there isn't one hard and fast answer to every fid.  It seems to be a trial and error thing....The most difficult part is find out "Why" the parrot is plucking which usually starts by ruling out health and diet issues.  Then you become a detective....Anyway, congratulations on your new arrival!!  Sometimes a new home/diet and lot's of love can change everything.  (I'm an incurable optimist... )  Good luck and keep posting updates and photos.

BL,
I've had good luck with aloe vera juice and water. Mix one part pure !00% aloe vera juice ( you can finf it at health food stores or I believe Walmart carries it too) to 3 parts water and mist the bird with it 3 x weekly.

Put a lot of shredder type toys in his cage. Corn husks, paper, lots of wood. Stuff he can destroy. Have the vet check him to make sure he isn't plucking due to illness.

Remove colored pellets, too much fruit and peanuts from his diet. Nan

My too"Merlin" was a plucker whe I got him...he was almost completely bald on his chest... he came form an alcoholic home....his food wasn't the best, and he was very skinny.........I fattened him up and have now convinced him that its OK to try new foods... but for the plucking I have found cardboard boxes to be the answer...........I was told by the vet I work for after extensive bloodwork and fecals etc., that i shoud put more wood in his cage(bolt it to the sides, hang it, put chunks that he could pick up on the bottom, etc.) that did not really work.........but one day i left a bnox to close to his cage and walah!!!!!he destroyed it.....so now i always keep his cage with boxes..........he goes in and out of them, chews them to bits, carries them around, i also flatten boxes and stick the in the slots of his cage.............he shreds them...........hias cage may look like a homeless person lives there but without the tower of boxes he plucks again.........right now he has a beautiful fully feathered breast!!!!!!!!!!!

I have seen first hand what  a good diet, proper vet care, proper toys and lots of love can do.  However there are lots of time you just have to accept who they are and just love them anyway.  I have heard the AviCalm works wonders.  Good Luck!!!!!
