Anyone have a tasty human bean soup recipe!  Figure if I'm going to try to get my bird to try beans I could eat it too.  I made ham and bean soup yrs ago but don't have a ham bone to try that again.

Indy we all make a bean soup for the birds but I doubt that any use a ham bone. Don't you think the ham might be a bit salty?
In other words you are probably up a creek if you don't enjoy bean soup made from a variety of beans and maybe just maybe some bland chicken broth.
There should be a recipe on the side bar and hopefully some great resipes to give you ideas... Too2

I've cooked beans for Allie but I just thought maybe someone had a recipe that was tasty to humans that the birds could share.  I didn't make the soup with the ham bone for birds I made that for us.  I'm trying to introduce different kinds of foods to the new baby and thought bean soup sounded good to share!

Well, I make bean soup for me and the birds, but I can't really give you a recipe. I just soak the bean mix (sometimes I get a mix of beans, and sometimes I make my own mix from a variety of beans, peas, lentils, etc.) overnight. Then I bring them to a boil and simmer for a while. Then I add whatever veggies I have, and some herbs and such. I cook until the veggies are done, and then we eat it!

If I have leftover chicken or turkey, I'll dice that up and add it at the end.

Indy you did good and I need to soak some of the 15 bean mix package and try to see if they'll eat them today to give them a change in their diet ...
they like the hot mushy meals and yet aren't crazy about beans......... so how did you make yours?????

I buy a package of Mankiewitz (sp) bean soup mix in a small cellophane bag, toss the spices bag in the trash. Soak overnight, change the water and simmer at least an hour, add frozen corn, chopped carrots and 10 minute cooking brown rice. Cook and store in small bags in freezer for weeks or in refrig for a few days. You could try mashing a few of the beans and leaving some whole.  Add some green stuff to the daily portion and hot dried red pepper flakes. Good natural Vitamin A.
For yourself, take some out for the bird, unseasoned, and finish cooking the rest with part of the spices.
I also have made it with my own mix of beans. Storage of all those dried beans is a problem for me if I buy all of the varieties in the mixes so I usually use the pre-packaged mixes.
You can also use whole wheat pasta instead of the rice.

Here's a recipe of mine I put here a long long time ago.

  Homemade Corn-Bean-Rice Mix for Parrots

2 pkgs dried sweet corn (hard to find)(Subst frozen corn)
2 pounds brown rice
2 pounds dried pinto beans
2 pounds dried kidney beans
2 pounds dried lima beans
2 pounds dried blackeye peas
2 pounds dried navy beans
2 pounds dried split peas

This recipe makes so much that I mix it, store it dry,
and cook it in small batches.

Pick through beans to remove foreign matter.
Mix together and rinse well.
Soak overnight in very large soup pot.
Rinse again.  Add fresh water to cover.
Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for
several hours til tender. Stir often.
Pack into baggies for freezer.
Add frozen or fresh corn, cooked pasta and
dried hot red peppers before serving warm.
Cost of dry ingredients about $16.

Do you make the same proportion as in the recipe Annie and freeze it?
Mine are not bean eaters and I've tried firm, mushy and inbetween and decided beans are not a fav of theirs....
I can get by with the 15 bean mix though usually the freezer made up serving baggies I eventually trash as I never know how long they'll stay "good"

They are good recipes you shared......

Annie made them with a whole bunch more things than me.  I wanted them plain so I can see if she is eating them at all.  I am going nuts trying different things.  I cooked them like Annie said.

I let them drain in the strainer to cool then put them in a freezer bag.  I made it lay in a thin layer in the bag and stuck in flat in the freezer.  This way I just break off what I need.

No, Scots. I bought all those beans and portioned out enough for about a week, cooked those and left the other dry. Easier to store if you mix them all up and put in a large plastic canister--airtight.
Mine aren't particularly fond of beans but I used to have several who loved them.
Indy, next time, if there is one, try leaving a bit of liquid and lightly mash them in it. If she likes mushy stuff she may like them better. Mine will not eat mushy things. You could also crumble cornbread in it to soak up some liquid.
I lay everything flat, too, because even if I need all of it, it thaws quicker. I do up rice and pasta ahead of time so I can dump it in with veggies.

So far she doesn't like mushy stuff!  I can't find anything she really loves! They weaned her on two kinds of pellets, nuts and seeds.  I cut the seeds out only to give at night time like a treat and also the nuts.  I weigh her everyday.  I just wish I could find something she would just dive into. I had her eating mostly the Pretty Bird African species pellets and then she changed her mind and now wants the Zupreem. I think I'll keep putting both in and then when she is eating  other kind of  good things I am going to try and cut back on the Zupreem.  Who knows if that will work! Having the scale helps alot!

When the kids moved out I rarely cooked any more!  Now with this new baby I guess I will start again!  Poor hubby he is second around here!  He thought I made a roast and potatoes and carrots for him the other day!  Don't tell him but I made it for the bird! Not the roast the other stuff!

When I freeze my bean mix, I take a few sheets of plastic wrap and line my mini muffin tin, spoon in little tablespoonfuls, then plastic wrap over that. When it's frozen, I pull the bottom plastic wrap out and toss all my "ice cubes" into a big freezer bag. Then I can just take a cube or two out and defrost it as needed. Mac doesn't like it, so he usually gets one cube, but Eevie will eat anything, and she'll take 2 or more cubes! Anything liquid I freeze in a bag laying flat, but over an empty ice cube tray so I have little indentations to help me break off the right sized piece.
