This was in another thread, but I feel it should have its own thread. Diet/nutrition for our birds is so important.

Good morning,

Ah, the silence of the snacking bird!  The Princess is a real cruncher, but this means she is eating the fresh vegetables and fruit in her bowl.  Carrots are the best.

Aren't we a lucky bunch to have such great pets?  I just had my sixtieth birthday, and I look on all the years with her.  No matter what what happening, she thought I was the greatest.  It doesn't get much better than that.

Is it all right for Amazons to drink Crystal Light?  That's the beverage of choice in my house, and she really likes the pink lemonade.  She has two or three sips, but I want to be sure it's safe for her.

Barbara

Barbara, in response to your question I'm going to refer you to some articles.

The first is found in the Land of Vos. It is an article by David Poole, titled "Inapprorpriate Nutrition in Parrots". There is a link to it in our Bird Care Articles and Links, on the "Links-Bird Articles" page, but to go directly to the article, click here.

Since we are talking about diet, I'm also going to refer you to an article by Carolyn Swicegood, in the Land of Vos' The Kitchen Physician, called Greening of the Parrot Diet. it is also on the links page above, but click here to go directly there.

There are several really interesting articles in Winged Wisdom, on the Birds N Ways site, including some on nutrition and/or diet. To see the entire list of articles, go here. Some of these include (just click the title to go to the article) Help! My Bird Won't Eat Vegetables!, Adventures in Birdy BreadDifferent Species Different Diets. There are several more there, but that's a start! lol

I'm sure that other members will give you lots of information as well.

Cheers!

Abby

Processed sugars and sugar substitutes are not a good thing for them... but then they aren't good for us either.
I would suggest getting a real lemon, peal and just give him a bit of it in his own water cup

I like Copper's idea about the lemon in water or even OJ in water or pomegranate juice.

As an example of what can happen with artificial sweeteners, when my hubby eats or drinks something with them he begins to have such terrible joint pain that he can barely move. Most people don't react like that but if humans can have that reaction birds could have a violent reaction, too.

Abby's suggestions on nutrition articles are great. So useful when questioning various foods.

Some really good sites and mine like the touch of lemon in their water..
I usually give them oranges and we found a road side stand that had the best tangerines... sweet and juicy... and tomatoes off the vine... all farmer grown... strawberries hugh... good night my mouth is watering....lol

Another possible reaction in humans is loose/runny bowel with artificial sweetners. Even the ones that are derived from real sugars.... Just imagine what 1/2 a teaspoon does to the human that reacts and compare that with what it does to the bird.
Not a nice thought!

Fergie and Tyco both make their own juce Ive actually watched then I give them a slice of peeled orange and the will stand over their water dish and let the orange juice drip into their water when their finished chewing the orange they put whats left in their water also I guess they like orange juice I give my birds 100% real juice a couple times a week with their egg breakfast they love it I make scramled eggs usually but I throw in peppers and cheese grated carrots  and sometime when I feel like going all out for them I make hashbrown potatos out of sweet potato they go crazy for them its easy to feed good things to your birds if you think of them that they are just like your children you want them to grow up healthy and strong with as few illnesses as possible    Pat

I need to take some sweet potatoes and make has brown for them... they would like that.... I'm back to short order cook again as the last batch of "quick meals" wasn't a hit either..
I think I fall short of being inventive when it comes to their meals. I get tired of thinking what to cook for them today?...

Sweet potato hash browns....yum yum.  Thanks for the idea Etta, I'm going to try that sometime.  I wrote it down on an index card (a pink one) and stuck it on the fridge with a magnet.

Di's right. However, us humans should leave out the "artificial" in our own diets. MUCH healthier to have the real thing in moderation.

I don't normally "do" artificial, as I've had too many adverse reactions to things. I do occasionally use things sweetened with Splenda, because it was recommended by the diabetic nutritionist that I saw, but very rarely. Like the others, I feel it is better to have less of the real thing than to use artificial both for me and for my birds.

I've been reading recently that although Splenda is "derived" from sugar, it has chemicals added to it.
